Margaret Mary Bowie
1927-2018
Margaret (MacPherson) Bowie, aged 91, passed
away at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, on May 20, 2018.
Born in Croft (Campbelltown), Antigonish
County, she was the daughter of the late Agnes (Campbell) and John
« The Barber » MacPherson.
She
attended both Mount St. Bernard College and the Normal College at
Truro and had a long career teaching in the Antigonish School
District. Later in life, she received her « X » ring, which
was a great symbol of accomplishment. A parishioner of Immaculate
Conception Parish, Heatherton, Margaret was a long-time member of the
CWL, a passionate genealogist, careful reader, and life-long learner.
She was also a formidable figure and outspoken on issues that were
important to her. She married Wilfred Bowie in June of 1947, and they
celebrated sixty-five years together before Wilfred’s
passing in 2013.
Their children: Harold, South River; Dorothy
(Basil Ludlow), Pleasant Valley; Linda (John Gabriel), Fitchburg Mass;
John (Debbie), Antigonish; Carol, Charlottetown; Kenny, South Side
Harbour; Wilfred (Sonya), Afton; George, Calgary Alta; Edward,
Dunmore; and Richard, Bayfield, will fondly remember picnicking
beneath the old apple tree, ripe strawberry patches, her mature
summertime garden, and her dancing to the St Ann’s Reel.
She
is also survived by her sister Teresa « Terry » Heslop,
Charlotte, NC; brother Rod (Pat), Thunder Bay, Ontario; and
sister-in-law, Pat MacPherson, St. Andrews. Margaret had twenty-two
grandchildren and visits from her twenty-seven great-grand
children brought her great joy in her final years.
She
was predeceased by daughter, Donna, brothers, John and Angus; and
step-father, James Bray.
Visitation will be held in C.L. Curry Funeral
Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish from 2-4 and 7-9 on Wednesday,
followed by funeral on Thursday at 11 am at Immaculate Conception
Church, Heatherton. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations in memory
may be made to the Antigonish Food Bank or St. Mary’s
Cemetery, Heatherton. Online condolences:
