Death Notice
Peacefully on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Vision Nursing Home, Margaret Joan Russell passed away at the age of 93. Born on November 6, 1924 in Brownville Junction, Maine, Joan was a graduate of Ontario Ladies’ College and the University of Western Ontario. A resident of Sarnia for over 60 years, Joan was employed by the Sarnia/Lambton School Board as an elementary school specialist in the teaching of reading skills. Joan is now reunited with her loving husband James Russell (2001). Cherished mother of Rick Gamble (Bonnie) of Traverse City, Michigan. Predeceased by treasured granddaughter Heather Gamble (2014) and lovingly remembered by great-granddaughters Britt Keena Vaughn (Stephen) and Grace Gamble of Grand Rapids, MI. Dear aunt of Ralph Birtch (Nancy) of Aurora, ON, Ann Price of Chapala, Mexico, Joan Lough (David) of Burnaby, BC, Susan Reynolds (Doug) of Braeside, ON, and Heather Brown (Dick) of Chelsea, QC. In addition, Joan was a special great-aunt and great-great-aunt to at least 39 other family members. Predeceased by her parents Harold and Sarah Irene Harshaw, her brothers Ralph and Charles Harshaw, and her sister Mary Crawford. She will be sorely missed by great-niece Julie who, through regular and frequent visits, provided a caring and newsy family connection. The family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to the nurses, PSWs and staff of Superior Crescent at the Vision Nursing Home for the tender care, compassion and good humour they provided for Joan over the last 9 months. Joan will be remembered by all for her uncanny ability to solve crossword puzzles but even more so for her elegance, strength of character, unfailing loyalty and dry wit. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at a later date, followed by a burial of ashes in Lakeview Cemetery. In appreciation of Joan’s life, please consider a donation to the Organization for Literacy in Lambton (OLL) located at 100 College Avenue North, Room 103, Sarnia, N7T 7X2 or online at canadahelps.org
