OBITUARY
MARGARET GAIL JOHNSON
Born July 8, 1944
Margaret Gail Johnson (Gail), age 74 of Edmonton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 24, 2018 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital after a brief struggle with illness.
Gail was born July 8, 1944, in Daysland Alberta, the daughter of David and Elizabeth McCarroll. She grew up with her 5 brothers and sisters (Wally, Betty, Joan, Colleen and Danny) on the family farm just a few miles south of Daysland.
In 1962, Gail Married Peter Smolski and they had two sons, Trevor and Derrick, and they enjoyed their family and time together going on picnics, visiting family and Sunday drives. Tragically Peter’s life was cut short in January 1972. Gail was left to raise her two Sons on her own. The boys say they always felt Mom’s love and are so grateful in how she raised them in spite of the difficult circumstances. Gail was a hard worker, at this point the head cashier at Safeway, and the boys never felt they did without.
A few years after Peter’s death Gail meet Brian Johnson and they were married in December 1974. They enjoyed life together spending time at their cottage on Buffalo Lake (Pelican Point), boating, snowmobiling and many other outdoor activities. In the summer of 1978 they made this their permanent home. Over the years many family gatherings were hosted at “the lake” and many memories were made.
In 1994 life once again changed for Gail as her and Brian would end their marriage. As resilient as ever Gail would again make her way on her own starting over in Edmonton and opening a ladies clothing consignment store, which she ran until 2015. She would also find time to get her RMT (registered massage therapist) certificate, which required countless hours and dedication.
A few years after Gail moved to Edmonton she got to know a very nice gentleman in her Condo building. They became best friends and Gerry Labossiere and Gail were together and married, up until Gerry’s passing in August of 2012. Gail enjoyed her wonderful new family and loved them very much and they became a big part of her life.
Gail is survived by her two sons, Trevor Smolski and his wife Jeannette, and their children Danielle, Tyler, Stephen, and their spouses; and Derrick Smolski and his wife Kim, and their children Emma and Hudson; as well her sisters Joan (Jim) and Colleen (Ernie). Also, the Labossiere families (Michelle, Lisa, Andrea, Rob, Martin, and all of their spouses and children); the Johnson families; Smolski families; and many nieces and nephews who thought of Gail and their “second mom”.
There will be a memorial service on Friday August the 3rd at 2 p.m. at the First Memorial Harmony Chapel 10541- 81 avenue in Edmonton.
