James Douglas Mabbott husband, father, grandfather, and kind physician and friend to many, was born in Hanna Alberta on April 26, 1937, and passed away on December 28, 2018 in Abbotsford, BC. Jim was the second child of Elmer and Marjory Mabbott, and all his siblings, Leona(Dan Goldsmith), Les(Linda), Sharon and Stan (Gina) share in the loss of their brother.
Jim’s family moved to Lacombe, Alberta when Jim was young. Jim attended school in Lacombe, graduating from Lacombe High School in 1955, before earning his BSc. (1960) and MD (1963) at the University of Alberta.
Jim had an early love of music and began taking violin and singing lessons from a family friend, Mrs. Jardine. He was a boy soprano and sang often in church and at many civic events. Singing and playing the piano, as well as listening to Opera and participating and enjoying choir music was a life long pleasure for Jim.
He also enjoyed carpentry, and doing small renovation projects, including working on “the cabin”, and was very involved in his church Braemar Baptist and Lendrum Mennonite both in Edmonton where he served in many roles including deacon. At University he was involved in Inter-varsity Christian, where he would meet, his life long friend, companion and strength, Gweneth Nelson. He and Gweneth were married in 1960, and after a short stint in Enderby, BC where his daughter Kim (Robert Adria) was born, he had a full career in Edmonton where sons, Donald (Brenda Lepp) and David (Susie Reiss) were born. He was a good and supportive father to his kids, while they were growing up. He was proud of them as adults and appreciated and enjoyed their choices for spouses.
Jim was known as a caring and compassionate physician, but it was his family, and particularly his eight Grand-children who gave him much pleasure. Jim neither watched or played sports, but each of his grandchildren remember him fondly for his many outings of mini-golf, nature walks or the Drumheller Dinosaur trip. Michael and Daniel Adria from Kelowna, BC Connor, Aaron, Jordan and Adriana Mabbott of Toronto, Ont. and Simon and Georgia Mabbott of NY, NY, each got to know and Love him uniquely as Grandpa.
There are numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and patients, sharing in the immediate families loss, and the family is appreciative of their care and condolences. There will be a memorial service for Jim on Saturday January 5, 2019 at 11:00am, at St. Matthew Anglican Abbotsford (2010 – Guilford Drive, Abbotsford) In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the “Canadian Mental Health Association, in memory James D. Mabbott”(website: vf.cmha.bc.ca)
