Obituary for Lynda Ann « Granny » McCraney (Burns)
Lynda Ann “Granny” McCraney
Suddenly on December 21, 2018 at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in Barry’s Bay, age 73.
Lynda was born in Toronto on September 18, 1945 to Leslie and Eva (Campbell) Mayhew. After Eva’s death in 1953, she was lovingly raised in Oak Ridges by Carl and Dorothy (Woolley) Burns. She attended both Aurora High School and King City Secondary, leaving school to pursue the money she saw her sisters making in the workforce. Throughout her career, she worked in the grocery business and managed produce departments from Scarborough to Aurora and from King City to Killaloe. Colleagues of all ages confided in Lynda, a testament to her nature as a great listener. Her role as confidante earned her the nicknames “Mom” and “Granny” variously.
Lynda loved the pace and rhythm of small town life, her “happy” house by the side of the road, tending plants and garden beds, road trips, Newfoundland, scratch tickets, and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans (size 8 petite). She laughed easily, smiled often, and despite her stubbornness, embraced technology as a septuagenarian – especially when it enabled her to connect with old friends or spend an afternoon solving true crime puzzles. Lynda considered the time she spent raising a family in Beaverton, on the shores of Lake Simcoe, to be among the best years of her life.
She is survived by her daughter Tricia McCraney, son-in-law Clayton Scott, and the grandsons she adored: Isaac, Owen and Mason Scott. She will be greatly missed by sisters Barb Law and Marie Cree (Bob); brothers Larry Burns (Barb), Tom Burns (Deb), Lorne Burns (Ann), Jerry Mayhew, Don Mayhew (Dian) and Dave Mayhew (Rita); many nieces and nephews, extended family, friends, and the community of Killaloe. Predeceased by her son Mikey, as well as brothers Bob (Marilyn), Ron (Gail), Tom (Margaret), and Rick Mayhew.
Professional arrangements entrusted to the care of Zohr Family Funeral Home, Killaloe. A celebration of Granny’s life will be held at the Killaloe Curling Club on Saturday January 5, from 1-4pm. Anyone wearing a suit or fancy dress will be turned away – please wear a comfy sweatshirt in her honour. Interment in the Old Stone Church Cemetery in Beaverton at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please grow dahlias or peonies to remember her by. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would also be appreciated and can be made online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com
