Corning, Lucy « Johnena », 82, of Malignant
Cove, Antigonish County, passed away suddenly following a short
illness on October 27, 2018, surrounded by her children.
Johnena passed away at home, where she was at her
happiest.
Johnena was the wife of the late Donald Avard Corning, the
love of her life. She was a daughter of the late Ronald and
Anna (Murdock) Nicholson.
Johnena graduated as a CNA from Grace Maternity
Hospital. She worked for awhile before becoming a
stay-at-home mom to five children. Later, Johnena became
well-known in the retail community, working at Goodman’s,
Alteen Jewellers, The Book Shelf, MacGillivray’s Jewellers,
and Marie’s Flowers.
Johnena was happiest on the beach at her « little
slice of heaven » at the Cove enjoying her children,
grandchildren, great-grandchildren and some special family and
friends. She was known for her easy-going, patient, and kind
ways, and especially her beautiful smile.
She is survived and will be sorely missed by her children,
Shawn (Bonnie), Malignant Cove; Ronda (Doug) Stewart, St.
Joseph’s; Jan (Bernard) Hanifen, Lower South River; and
Sandra Comeau, Antigonish; grandchildren, Donald James
« DJ » Corning, Darren Corning, David Corning, Shanna
Stapfer, Duncan Stewart, Kari Stewart, Krystal Siokalo, Kathryn
McLaughlin, Candace Hanifen, Andrea Hanifen, Eddy Hanifen, Bernard
Hanifen, Jr., Morgan MacNeil, and Madison MacNeil; 20
great-grandchildren; sisters, Wini Nicholson, Starr Hilchey;
sister-in-law, Doreen Nicholson; and many aunts, uncles, nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
Predeceased by her husband, Donald; son, Donald, Jr.; and
brother, Robert Nicholson.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in
C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish.
Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 2:00pm in St. Mary’s
Church, Lismore, Reverend Colin MacKinnon
presiding.
Family flowers only, please. In lieu of flowers,
donations to the Victorian Order of Nurses or St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital Foundation (Palliative Care Unit)
