Passed away peacefully on July 12, 2018 at Parkview Meadows Christian Retirement Home in Townsend, Ontario at the age of 92. She was born in Beilen, The Nehterlands. Living in Holland during WWII, Loekie’s education was cut short. Her family was very involved in the Dutch Resistance movement assisting Jewish families with safe shelter and movement out of German occupied Holland. She emigrated to Canada in 1951 and lived mostly in Orillia, ON and Grande Prairie, AB. After raising her children and returning to finish school, she worked as a telephone operator at Alberta Government Telephone, retiring in 1993. She valued above all her faith, family and the many friends she made throughout her life. She was an avid life long learner, and participated in many activities including church groups, volunteering, reading, arts and crafts, gardening, photography, learning computer skills and travelling. She was very fond of all animals. Loekie was predeceased by her father and mother, Berend and Rachel (nee Edelman) Winters and her brother John Winters. She is survived by her children Rick (Wendy), Grace and Bernice (Dennis Weaver predeceased); her grandchild Jennifer (Dan Austin); great grandchildren Logan and Austin Poirier; and sisters Janny (Frank) Eygenraam and Truus (Dolf – predeceased) Otten. She is both survived and predeceased by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins in Holland, Canada, the USA and Australia. Visitation, funeral service and reception will all be held on Tuesday July 24, 2018 at the Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia, (705) 326-3595. The visitation will be held from 1 – 2 P.M. followed by the funeral service (officiated by Rev. Karen Horst of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church) at 2 P.M. Reception to follow the service. At Loekie’s request, cremation to follow with interment of cremated remains at St. Andrew’s St. James’ Cemetery Columbarium. Special thanks to everyone who provided Loekie with care in her later years including Doctors Mary Cambridge and Paul Medve and their staff, staff at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial, Norfolk General and Hagersville hospitals, and staff at Tudhope, Birchmere, lay minister at Parkview Meadows Christian retirement home. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Orillia, ON or the SPCA chapter of the donor’s choice would be greatly appreciated.
