Obituary of Lorne Caughill
A proud Canadian and dedicated veteran, Lorne gave his final soldier’s salute in his 93rd year on Remembrance Day.
Born in Niagara-on the-lake in 1925, Lorne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vera (2017) who he missed dearly. Lorne, a true blue family man, will be greatly missed by his surviving sister, Doris Mosher and his four grateful children Shelley (Tim) Barrie, Leslee Urquhart, Bruce (Jennifer) Caughill, and Andrea (Colin) Mickie. Grandchildren Jordan, Gavin (Shelby), Lucas (Linsey), Liv, Rosalyn, Katie, Grace, Maddie, and William will miss Grampy’s stories, jokes, and guidance.
Lorne served in both World War II and in the Korean War and was one of five Canadians present at the signing of the Armistice in Panmunjom in 1953. Following military service, Lorne started as an educator in Kirkland Lake and came to Kitchener in 1967. Lorne served as a principal first at Waterloo-Oxford, then Cameron Heights subsequently retiring as a superintendent for the Waterloo Region District School Board in 1985. In their retirement, Lorne and Vera celebrated many years of travelling adventures, good health, and most importantly, cherished time with their growing family. For many years, Lorne was a member of the Rotary Club of Kitchener, and the Probus Club of Kitchener-Waterloo.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dad’s devoted and protective caregiver, Julie Inkster, to caring and attentive family friend Dr. Karen Cameron, and to the compassionate staff at St. Luke’s Place in Cambridge.
