Francis (John) Vernon Lindsey, born August 14, 1929, passed away peacefully at Mountain Lakes Seniors Place on August 15, 2018, in his 89th year. He was raised near Orient, Washington just south of Christina Lake, British Columbia. John’s early years on the ranch during the great depression were filled with long work days, but many happy outdoor memories.
He joined the military in WW2 at the early age of 15 following his brother’s lead, and served in the South Pacific theatre. After his discharge he eventually became a telegraph operator and began work with the Great Northern Railway where he was posted to Nelson, B.C. John met Dorothy Reierson at the young adults’ club at the Nelson Anglican church under the watchful eye of Reverend Dr. Tommy Leadbeater, Dorothy’s uncle. A few years later they were married and settled in Nelson to raise a family.
John was active in a number of community service organizations, and he particularly enjoyed the Kiwanis club where he worked tirelessly to establish the Kiwanis senior’s facilities and a variety of other community projects. John loved to socialize and visit with his numerous friends, family members and strangers willing to listen to his stories. His generosity was legendary, along with his occasional stunts and teasing.
He loved and highly respected the outdoors – fishing, hunting and gathering – and was proud to be a full treaty member of the Colville Confederated Tribes as well as a long-time member of the Nelson Rod and Gun Club. John worked for the railway for 38 years, retiring as the agent in charge of the Kootenay division. He had already fulfilled a fulsome life sharing that famous smile, those helping hands, and accomplishing his greatest desire of being a dedicated father, husband, friend and confidant.
He has resided at Mountain Lakes Senior Place since 2005 where he received great care from his “second” home. John was predeceased by his wife Dorothy in 2014, and is survived by his sons and daughters Mike, Susan (David), Dan (Kelly) and Terri, his sister-in-law Sandy (Denis) Helbeque and sister Fay (Bruce) Keller, grandchildren Amber (Luke), Sam, Caleb (Amy), Claire and Maddie and great grandchildren Evelyn, Ethan and Miles.

May the fish be hungry, the huckleberries plentiful, the company jovial and surroundings festive with all of God’s blessing.
