Lindsay Carroll Gates
1933-2018
Lindsay Carroll Gates – of Timberlea,
passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at the age of
84 years. The son of the late Millage
and Dorothy (Spidle) Gates, he was raised
in the Forties, Lunenburg County. Lindsay grew up on a farm
and always remained a country boy at heart. Together with his
life-long love, Margaret, he moved to Halifax to pursue his
education, set down roots and raise a family. A
passionate fan of the automobile, and everything
that entailed, Lindsay studied Auto Body Repair at trade school and
began a career that spanned six decades of working, teaching and
mentoring in automotive related positions. As an
employee he worked
with Trainor GMC, Canavan’s Insurance
Appraisal Services and The Co-operators Insurance Services.
Throughout his career and after retirement, he continued to work,
volunteer, and serve on a variety of boards and
committees of automotive related organizations, especially those that
he considered relevant in building a brighter and safer
future for the next generation of automotive specialists. A
passionate community supporter and volunteer, Lindsay always made time
to serve organizations such as The Boy
Scouts of Canada, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, BLT Trail
and the Community Monitoring Committee of the Otter Lake
Landfill. He was a passionate hunter and fisherman
and relished every moment spent outside and with his
hunting and fishing friends. He
was an ardent steward of the earth
and always a proponent of planning current use to ensure
future supply whether on his woodlot or in his annual
vegetable garden. Lindsay was a natural leader and
teacher. He seemed to attract the neighbourhood lads who were
looking for guidance and advice on the issues of their day. The father
of three daughters, Lindsay enjoyed the horseplay of young
men and gained as much or more
from the guy time as did the lads. A devoted husband and
father, he taught his girls to sit up straight, live life by
the golden rule and water-ski whenever you have the chance. He leaves
to grieve his daughters, their spouses and children;
Carla Gates-Morris (Bill Morris) of Dartmouth and son, Cory
Morris (Gisele Morris) of Halifax; Peggy Gates-Hammond (Roger
Hammond) of Dartmouth and Julie Gates (Lisa Kelly)
and children, Thomas and Amelia Eaton of Toronto, as
well sister, Winifred Forbes (Eldon); brother
in law, Calvin Hiltz; sister in law, Maxine MacDonald
(John) and many nieces, nephews and special others. He was
predeceased by his wife of 60
years, Margaret, his parents and sister, Jean.
Special thanks to the friends, colleagues and neighbours who have been
so attentive during Lindsay’s illness. Particular thanks to
Dr. Robert Scovill for his excellent
care, to the staff of the QEII Cancer Centre for
their professionalism and attentiveness, and to the staff of the
Palliative Care team of the QEII for their tenderness and caring
touch. Memorial donations may be made to St.
Andrew’s Anglican Church, Timberlea, The BLT Trail or a
charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. There will be no
visitation by request. The funeral service, followed
by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 15,
2018 in St.
Andrew’s Anglican Church, Timberlea, The
Reverend Mark Pretty officiating. A private
interment will take place at a later date. Funeral arrangements have
