Obituary Overview
Linda Jerine Jackson
Jackson (Bernard), Linda Jerine – 72 of Halifax passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Halifax, NS. Linda was born August 30, 1945 in Halifax, NS to George and Elsie (Sparks) Bernard and raised in the community of Lake Loon, Dartmouth, NS.
Linda attended Lake Loon School, Admiral Westphal School and later attended Findley School where she
attained high school equivalency. She married Gordon Arthur Johnston of Halifax on June 25th, 1965. They had
one daughter, Darla Fawn Johnston. On January 17, 1986, Linda married Charles Daniel Jackson of Hammonds
Plains, NS – her husband of 27 years until his death in 2011.
As the third of nine children, Linda embraced her role as a child-care giver at an early age, beginning her career as a nursery worker at the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children in Dartmouth, NS, at the age of 17. Displaying a wonderful knack for working with people, Linda spent a brief period employed at the Family Planning Association of Halifax as an outreach worker and in retail as a sales clerk at Price Masters in Halifax. Always a punctual and diligent worker, her longest employment was at Hermes Electronics in Dartmouth, where she was employed for 15 years. Her strong work ethic lead to pursuing training to become an assembly-line supervisor. Upon retirement, she returned to her love of children, becoming primary caregiver to her two granddaughters
and two great-nieces until fully retiring in 2005.
Despite battling health challenges for 18 years, Linda lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; spending time
with family and close friends and displaying her love of cooking, baking and knitting – all of which she was highly
skillful at. She enjoyed good food, murder mysteries, road trips and spending time with upbeat people. She had a
sharp and quick-witted sense of humour and enjoyed making people laugh.
Linda was a dedicated and active member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, where she enjoyed participating in door to door ministry as well as district assemblies and conventions.
Linda was predeceased by her parents George and Elsie Bernard; husband Charles Daniel Jackson; and eldest sister
Vera Sewell (Newton), Toronto.
She is survived by her daughter; Darla Richard (Shane), Halifax. Granddaughters; Sharifa Upshaw, Halifax and Jamila Upshaw, Toronto. Siblings; Camilla Watkins (Walter) of Vancouver, BC; Marion Mulder (Donald-deceased), George Bernard Jr. (Dr. Wanda Thomas-Bernard), Garry Bernard (Carla); Sherleen Bernard, Delvina Bernard (Dr. Harvey Millar); Kimberly Bernard, all of Halifax. Goddaughter; Crystal Mulder, Halifax. Foster sister; Trudy Sheppard, Toronto. Eight step-children, several step-grandchildren; many inlaws, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family extends gratitude to the health care staff at Veterans Memorial Hospital and the QEII Hospital.
Family, friends and others whose lives Linda touched are invited to reminisce and celebrate at the Atlantic Funeral
Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth for a Tribute Service and family visitation on Friday, August 31, 7-9pm. A Memorial
service officiated by Elder Glenn Berry of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses will be held on Saturday,
September 1, at 1pm at the Atlantic Funeral Home. Repast to Follow at same location.
