Lillian Florence Symonds
Lillian Symonds, 76, of Dartmouth Nova Scotia, passed away August 7th 2018, after a brief illness. Lillian was born on November 5 1941, in Halifax Nova Scotia to the Late John Adams and Gloria (Turner) Adams.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 52 years, Allan Theodore Symonds, daughter Lillian “Missy” (Stuart) Searl of Eastern Passage and son Richard (Stephanie) Symonds of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She was the loving grandmother of Christopher Searl, Jourdain Symonds, Michael Symonds, Daniel Searl and Josephine Symonds. Attentive great grandmother to Mason Symonds and Jackson Collins-Searl. She is also survived by her special god children Dwight Adams, Nicole Quackenbush and Jocelyn Anderson.
Mom is survived by the most amazing siblings, Nolan Carvery, Marlene Nelson, John “Bubby” (Sharon) Adams, Carla (Gary) Bernard, Perry (Leslie) Adams, Teena Soula, Paula Adams. Coming from a very large family, mom has special memories with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and many extended family.
She was predeceased by her siblings Sandra Donaldson, Clinton Adams, Milton “Butch” Adams, Derrick “Louie” Adams and Jeannie Adams.
Mom has left behind so many special friends from her days at Lawton’s Drugs Home Health Care; Amethyst Chapter Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile Athena Temple and The Red Hatters.
Mom also made many friends through the years in the local Wives Clubs in CFB Lahr Germany and CFB Gagetown, NB; she still kept in touch with many of them right up until now. Mom kept active in the Legion in both Gagetown and Halifax but was mainly active in the Army Navy Air Force Unit 373 serving on the Ladies Auxiliary as well as Treasurer on the Executive Committee.
Four years ago, mom became the second African Nova Scotian to serve as Queen of Athena Temple #149 Halifax. She took her year very seriously and was honoured to participate in an unveiling of a new children’s wing at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. She was Past Worthy Matron of Amethyst Chapter of Eastern Star. These positions allowed her to travel throughout Canada and the United States forming lifelong friendships.
Special thanks to the many nurses and doctors on the Fourth Floor (East) of Dartmouth General Hospital who provided mom with the most wonderful care, and compassion, allowing her to be comfortable and at peace. To Dr. John Enright, mom tested you right to the end; I am sure she will be a patient to remember.
To Dr. Frank Lo, there are no words to describe the care that you have given our mother for the past 30 years. You were more than her doctor, you were her friend; we are so blessed to have you in our lives. And also thanks to Sue and Wendy for being there for my parents as well. We love you all.
Visitation will be held 7 pm – 9 pm on Thursday August 16th in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth.
Funeral service will be performed by Reverend Dr. Rhonda Britton at New Horizons Baptist Church, 5457 Cornwallis St, Halifax, August 17th at 10:00 am. Burial to immediately follow service 767 Main Street, Dartmouth. Repast to follow in Atlantic Funeral Home.
Mom loved flowers so feel free to send her flowers, or bring flowers on that day.
Mom has requested that donations be made to Convalescent Endowment Fund, Canadian Member Trustee,8608 152A Ave, Edmonton, AB T5E 3B2 for the Shriners Childrens’ Hospitals, which is very near and dear to Mom’s heart.
