1924-2018
At the Grand Falls General Hospital, April 21, 2018, Mr.
Léon-Paul Lapointe of Saint-Leonard passed away at the age
of 93. He was the widower of Frances
(Côté) Lapointe.
Eldest of eight children, his parents were Léonard
and Alvine (Lachance) Lapointe from Saint-Leonard, NB. He was drafted
August 1943 for WWII training, boarded the HMS Nieuw Amsterdam II and
sailed to England in January 1945. He was a Private with the Pictou
Highlanders – St John Fusiliers, enlisted for Active Service in
England and was a bilingual clerk at the Leatherhead No 10 Canadian
Repatriation Depot. In March 1946, he boarded the HMS Smiters, sailed
home to New Brunswick. He obtained a Certificate in Agriculture August
1946 from the Canadian Vocational Training School in Charlottetown,
PEI. He received straight A’s in all 7 subjects and developed a true
passion for gardening and arboriculture. He began his career as an
Immigration Officer in 1948 and retired as a Customs Officer in 1980.
After retiring, he obtained a Certificate from NBCC for completion of
a Christmas Tree Cultivation Program. In 1986, he received a
Certificate from the Saint-Leonard Airport in Radio Communication,
Safety & Records, Runway Conditions where he worked as a
Commissionaire for 6 years. He was an active member of the community,
delivering Red Cross Meals, volunteering and participating in
countless parish events. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 52 in Saint-Leonard for 60 years. He was a passionate fisherman
and hunter, who loved to share outdoor adventures and stories. He
loved a good game of cribbage and telling jokes. He always tried to
see the positive side of life and strongly held on to his faith to his
last breath.
His children, Karen, David, Patricia and Paula, would like to
thank all the good hearted friends, medical staff and Extra-Mural
staff who assisted him through the latter part of his
life.
He is also survived by his grandson Dennis Lapointe, his wife
Leslie Duff and their daughter (great granddaughter) Mariska from
Edmundston, NB, his grandson Shawn Lapointe from Saint-Leonard, NB,
his granddaughter Samantha Legge, her husband Ed and their newborn son
(great grandson) Benjamin Paul Legge from Charlottetown, PEI, his
brother Marc Lapointe and his wife Lucille Arsenault from Moncton, NB,
his sister Rachel Kirkland from Rowlett, Texas, the Dugas, Levesque
and Lapointe nieces and nephews who held him dear to
heart.
His funeral service will be held Friday April 27th at 2 p.m.
from the Saint-Leonard Roman Catholic Church, Saint-Leonard with
interment in the parish cemetery at a later date.
There will not be any visiting hours prior to the funeral
service.
For those who wish, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society
would be appreciated by the family.
