At Charlottetown on Saturday, September 29, 2018 of Leander N.
“Lee” Gill, Charlottetown, age 97 years. Lee was the last
surviving member of the ten children of the Dr. Frederick and Ida
(Burnham) Gill family.
Lee was born on January 27, 1921 and raised in Brigus, Newfoundland
which was still part of the British Colonies. In 1939, Lee enlisted in
the 59th (Newfoundland) Heavy Regiment Royal Artillery and was trained
as a signalman. By 1942 the war was raging and Lee and his comrades
were deployed overseas where they saw action in France, Holland and
Germany. After the war he met and married Peg (Delaney) and they had
one son, Fred. Following the war, Lee trained as a radio operator with
Transport Canada. He worked in St. John’s, Buchans and Battle
Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador. Then in 1967 his work relocated
him and the family to PEI. He accepted a position as a radio operator
at the Charlottetown Airport until his retirement.
Besides his family and work, Lee made commitments to his community as
an active life-long member of the Royal Canadian Legion, serving as
the Provincial President for several terms, and being a driving force
behind the QEH Equipment Drive.
When Lee was able, he also enjoyed salmon fishing, gardening, curling
and playing with his granddaughters and great-grandson. He was
predeceased by his wife Peg in 2002. His final years were spent under
the excellent care of Whisperwood Villa in Charlottetown.
Lee is lovingly remembered by his son Fred, his daughter-in-law Joyce
(MacLeod), his granddaughters Coralie (David) MacKinnon and Penny
Gill, his great-grandson Parker Gill-Douglas, and his sister-in-law
Mary Delaney.
