Lawrence (Larry) George Connolly 1947-2018
After a year long illness Larry passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on October 14, 2018 at the age of 71 surrounded by his family. There are some people who have the ability to turn an everyday situation into an hilarious story. Larry could keep you laughing for hours. He was like a dog with a bone. Once he got something in his head he wouldn’t let it go. Growing up in Shannon Park gave him lots of good memories of friends playing hockey and baseball etc. It brought him joy to reconnect with old friends in recent years. He attended Shannon Park Elementary, was taught by the Christian Brothers in Newfoundland for junior high and then attended St. Peter’s High School. At the age of 18 he married the love of his life Sally Penney. He and Sally had two sons (David and Trevor) who were his pride and joy as they were great at sports. Larry was an electrician for 50 years. He could never say no to anyone who needed a job done. He was preceded by brother, William (Billy) and son Trevor. Larry is survived by Sally, his wife of 53 years, son David, mother Emily (Weaver), sister Lynda Reid (John) all of Dartmouth. He also left behind nephew Kevin Zinck (Tammy), niece Lisa Bonn (Melvin) and their three children Ashley, Kevin and Kyle, niece Lori Connolly (Luce) and her daughter Emily Ayer, all of HRM and brother-in-law John Penney (Helen) in Seattle and his sons Jay (Anna), Jeffrey and Christopher and their mother Virginia, all of Montreal. Larry leaves behind many friends who have been with him through good times and difficult ones. He and Sally enjoyed many weekends in New Brunswick with their lifelong friends Dennis and Donna Murphy. Larry liked family gatherings, especially those with lots of food and drink. He loved western movies. Larry will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He faced his diagnosis with determination and grit, never complaining. There has been a Celebration of Life attended by a huge number of Larry’s friends and family at his favorite hangout, the MicMac Aquatic Club. He requested to have it while he could be present and see everyone. The Dartmouth Funeral Home has taken care of his cremation. Donations can be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Special thanks to the staff at 3 West Dartmouth General Hospital, family physician Dr. Creighton and secretary, Glenna, Dr. Stephen Gallinger (Toronto General Hospital), palliative and home care team, and palliative care nurse Yvonne (DGH).
