Obituary for Kelvin John Hughes
HUGHES, Kelvin John
Kelvin John Hughes of Centre Wellington, passed away on December 17th, 2018 in the comfort of his home. He was born to parents Leo Joseph Henry Hughes and Ellen Hanlon on July 30th, 1934 in Verdun, Québec. Although he was known as Kelvin, he was also well known as “Grandad” to many. His wit and great humour will be missed greatly, by students he taught, members of the church community and also his many friends and family. Kelvin completed his engineering degree at McGill University in Montréal, then completed his Master’s in Education degree and school planning at the University of Toronto. He then was the head of the mathematic department at Forest Heights Collegiate Institute, Waterloo Collegiate Institute and was an avid supply teacher at Kitchener Collegiate Institute. During retirement, he volunteered at elementary schools throughout the Upper Grand District School Board tutoring students in mathematics. He also took great pride as a Crossroads prayer partner within 100 Huntley Street from 2005-2017. He also enjoyed travelling with his wife to Arizona annually, cheering on his grandchildren in their sporting events, and playing with his dog Bess. Kelvin was predeceased by parents Leo and Ellen Hughes, brother Frank Hughes, sisters Adare Forester and Dorothea Hughes. He married Sara (also known as Sally), the love of his life, in 1960, who survives him. Kelvin is also survived by his children; Morgan (Deb), Paul (Lynne), and Gwen (Bill) and beloved grandchildren; Derek and Stacey. In earlier years, Kelvin and Sally enjoyed square dancing, playing bridge, making wine, and travelling with their kids. Kelvin’s unique sense of humour could crack anyone’s smile and the number of lives he touched were monumental. Family and friends will be received at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David Street South in Fergus, on Friday, January 18th from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral Service will be conducted at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 36 Henderson Street in Elora, on Saturday, January 19th, 2019 at 11:00am. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. www.grahamgiddyfh.com 519-843-3100
