Kathleen Sarah MacDougall
Sydney
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, Kathleen Sarah (MacPherson) MacDougall on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where she was admitted March 19, 2018.
Born in St. Andrew’s, Nova Scotia to the late Angus H. and Elizabeth A. (Bessie) MacPherson (nee MacIsaac) on May 27, 1922, she graduated high school at Mabou Convent with grade 12, scoring 4th in the province on Provincial exams. She returned to Antigonish where she worked as a Secretary/Receptionist for Dr. J.J. Carroll until her marriage to I. Lorne MacDougall from Inverness on November 11, 1947 in St. Andrew’s, Nova Scotia.
The wife of a banker, with family as her priority, she set up her homes in various locations across the province over the years, beginning in Sydney, Sydney Mines then to North Sydney, Stellarton and Westville.
In 1963, the family moved to Dartmouth where they made many happy memories. Family was always her joy and there Banook Canoe Club allowed her freedom to pursue her community service, knowing her children were happiest with their friends by the lake. It was during this time she was a member of the IWK Auxiliary volunteering to raise money for patient comfort.
In 1970 to Sydney once again, then 1974 to Halifax and finally to 21 Beechwood Crescent in Sydney, where she lived until her 90th year.
In her later years, she was thankful to receive Continuing Care assistance through Care Coordinator R. Bates who provided City Homemakers and VON services, which allowed her to stay at home.
In her final five years she resided in Long Term Care.
Although her family was her focus, her Boulderwood Bridge Club became a close second as her children grew up. Many packages of bridge mixture and reams of shrimp sandwiches were prepared in her kitchen which was always open for tea, and where she was always happiest feeding people, and being a genteel hostess.
Kathleen was a past president of her beloved Catholic Woman’s League in which she served faithfully for over 60 years. She also volunteered with the Friends of the MacGillivray for many years.
Kathleen is survived by her five children Elizabeth Jean (BJ) McMahon, Oakville, ON; Lorne (Marian Gaworecki), PEI; Kathy Black (Graham), Vancouver, BC; Lois Foster (Douglas), Sydney River and Bert (Lisa MacKenzie), Sydney; grandchildren, Andrew (Jennifer Van De Walle), Christopher (Anna Sidiropoulos), and Robert (Stephanie Linton) MacLellan, Jonathan MacDougall (Ellen MacNeil), Julia Greer Black, Molly Kathleen Foster, Lauren and Daniel MacDougall and 7 children joined her family circle via her sons-in-law: Melissa and Gordon Black, Kristi, Kathy and Ryan MacMahon; Burns and Timothy Foster; as well as great grandchildren: Logan, Braeden, Cameron, Stephen, Max, Isabella, Elizabeth, and Michaela.
