It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce Walkingshaw on August 29 – 4 days shy of her 64th birthday.
Joyce is survived by her husband Rob and their 3 sons: Adam & family (Renee, Ross, Audrey, Claire and Leah), Neal & family (Jennifer, Max and Sam), and Mark & wife (Jennifer). Joyce is also survived by sisters Lynne Brown, Shirley Denkhaus, Julie Millar, Joan Latimer and their families; as well as mother-in-law Betty Walkingshaw and sisters-in-law Shari Paziuk & family, and Lindy Sacuta.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents Bob and Isobel Bruder, sister Barbara Wiese, father-in-law Darwin and brothers-in-law Murray Brown and Al Sacuta.
Joyce grew up in Westlock, Alberta and moved to the Edmonton area after high school, settling in St. Albert where she lived for over 37 years. Joyce gave her all in everything she did—she was unable to cook a meal that fed under 10 people, spent hours digging in her garden, and was a dedicated mother, grandmother, wife and friend. She was also an avid reader and golfer, casual backgammon player, and theatre enthusiast.
Joyce cared for her family above all else. She relished days spent with her children & grandchildren, as well as weekends at the lake with her sister, brother-in-law, nieces, and their families.
Her family would like to thank Dr. Joy at the Cross Cancer Institute for his compassion and care throughout Joyce’s battle with breast cancer. Thanks to his guidance and the support of his team, Joyce enjoyed a full life for years after her diagnosis. We also thank the staff at Sturgeon Hospital for their care and compassion in Joyce’s last few weeks.
At Joyce’s request, there will be no formal funeral. However, the family will host an informal open house gathering September 10 from 1:00-4:00 PM at Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club, for those who wish to pay their respects. Please come dressed comfortably.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Cross Cancer Institute (11560 University Ave, Edmonton AB T6G-1Z2) or charity of your choice.
