Quiring/Cottrell – Joy watched her last Rough Rider Game on Saturday night October 20, at Mont St. Joseph and left with Gordon for a long missed dance. Joy was born February 22, 1933, and raised in Prince Albert, SK.
Joy is survived by her only child Joanie (Desmond) Short and her grandchildren Justin Buhler, Juliane Short (Paul), Andrew Short, Ryan Short and her only Grandchild Wells Buhler (Justin’s baby girl). One of Joy‘s greatest joys was spending her last Christmas with her lovely Wells. Joy is also survived by her best friend of close to 80 years Margaret Morgan. Margaret was Joy’s North Star.
She is predeceased by her husband Gordon Quiring (53 years married), parents Mary and James, sisters Ada and Joan, brothers Ted, Ronald and Margaret’s husband Bryn Morgan.
Many people remember Joy (Dental Therapist) from Dr. Connell and Dr. Mabel’s dentistry office. Joy calmed many a nervous patient. One of Joy’s patients, Mrs. Cooey named her baby after Joy. That’s what you call respect. Her daughter is often stopped on the street by past patients from the 60’s. She listens as they gush about Joy’s ability to help them through the traumatic dentistry experience. After more than a decade Joy went back to school and became a Medical Terminologist. Joy enjoyed almost 30 years of dedicated work at the Victoria Union Hospital Lab. Joy made many wonderful friends in the hospital community. Her deep bond with her workmates Sandy Maximchuk and Olga Baranitsky lasted until the day she passed. Joy joined Beta Sigma Phi in 1968 and enjoyed 50 years of rich friendships. Joy was known for her boundless generosity and her biggest gift was her gift of time. Joy lent a helping hand in more than a dozen community groups, charities, and Calvary United Church. Joy always had oodles of time for her family. Endless beach days and sundae bars at Waskesui, family Christmases with sleigh rides, birthdays and anniversaries. Joy organized and inspired everyone to have the best time. Joy was everyone’s hostess with the mostess. Joy’s many interests included petti point, politics, gardening (her yard own “Best Yard” in the horticultural show) all sports and staying current with everything that was going on in the world. Joy kept updated and open minded through all 85 years. You could spend hours talking to her about the past and current state of the world. Joy will be sorely missed by her family. The family gives credit to Joy for their strength and their love of a single rose, to the quick turn on a dance floor. Joy’s last two years of life were spent with grace and dignity in the arms of the Mont St. Joseph’s staff. Joy felt in the deepest part of her heart that Mont St. Joseph deserves the respect and support of our community. The celebration of Joy’s life will be scheduled by her family at a later date. A notice of the celebration date will be posted. Joy’s grandchildren live from New York to Seattle and a couple spots in between. Joy would want all her grandchildren in attendance as they were the stars in her life as she was the Moon.
