Joseph Paul Chertkow
1953-2018
It is with great
sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Joseph Chertkow on
July 9, 2018 in Toronto.
Joe was a devoted and
loving son to his mother, Evelyn, and his father, Gerald, who
predeceased him in 2013. He is survived by his son Daniel, whom he
adored, and by his beloved friend Marie Natanson, whose support and
kindness has been unfailing. He leaves behind a family shocked and
heartbroken by his loss, including loving younger siblings Howard
(Ann) and Patricia (Robert), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins
whom he cherished.
Joe grew up
in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and London, Ontario, graduating from the
University of Western Ontario’s Faculty of Law in 1975 with
a Bachelor of Law (LL.B) and some of the highest marks ever awarded in
the school’s history. He obtained an LL.M. in 1976 from the
London School of Economics and Political Science and entered the
Faculty of Law of the University of British Columbia, before moving
into the private sector. Joe worked as a legislation and policy
consultant for London Life, Royal Trust and Royal Bank. He then
embarked on a third career as an international legal and regulatory
expert, designing and drafting new legislative and regulatory frame
works for Asian banks in Vietnam, Mongolia, Cambodia and elsewhere.
Joe was an intense, erudite and brilliant man who was fiercely loyal
and generous to those he loved. He was known and admired for his
quirky wit, encyclopedic knowledge of rock trivia, passion for travel,
and terrible Ed Sullivan impersonations. He will be so missed.
