Obituary Overview
Joseph « Joe » James Dolomont
Dolomont, Joseph James, age 77 of Dartmouth.
“Joe”, “Joey”, “Dad”, “Poppy”, “Uncle Joey”, “Friend”-It is with profound sadness that we announce Joe’s peaceful passing at home in the presence of his devoted wife of 53 years, Shirley (MacNeil) after a brief period of illness.
Joe was the second child of the late Joseph and Veronica (Duffy) Dolomont. He was a kind, thoughtful and generous big brother to his beloved sister, the late Denise Dolomont; brothers Frank and Andrew.
Joe is survived by his wife Shirley, who has lovingly cared for him through his many health challenges; his only child, his son Troy; his adored grandsons, Parker and Brayden. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda (Andy) Lovasi, Joanie (Andras) Gruz; and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was a proud Cape Bretoner, a friend to many, educated at St. Francis Xavier University, N.S. Teacher’s College (Normal College) and St. Mary’s University. As a much loved and respected educator, he touched the lives of many young people who were so in need of his sincere interest in their personal and academic lives, especially during his employment with the then Halifax City School Board. He had a great influence on many teachers who attended Nova Scotia Teacher’s Summer School while he was an instructor. Joe lived a good life, sharing his time and talents by generously giving to his family, his church and community. Joe has been a faithful parishioner of Saint John XXIII Parish since 1979. He continued to be active in parish ministry until quite recently. During his time, he served as lector, lector contact person, and religious education teacher for many years. He was an active member of St. John XXIII Knights of Columbus Council 7302, serving as Grand Knight in 2006 and 2007. Prior to and following his term as Grand Knight, he continued to hold executive positions. He served as District Deputy in District 11 in 2009 and 2011and belonged to the Msgr. Gerald Murphy Assembly 2223 where he served as usher for many years.
Over the years, Joe organized many Blood Donor Clinics at St. John XXIII Parish. Joe’s contribution towards building a better blood system for Canadians was recognized with a Volunteer Service Award in 2014. In January 2018, the Canadian Red Cross recognized and honoured Joe for his generous support and commitment to the Canadian Red Cross for the difference he made in transforming the lives of vulnerable people in Canada. In October 2006, the St. John XXIII Award was presented to Joe for his many years of devoted service to the parish.
A fine baker and cook, he generously provided meals, snacks and treats to individuals in the parish and in the community of Cole Harbour. He could often be found in the kitchen of St. John XXIII Parish, helping with the monthly K of C brunches, fundraisers, luncheons and meetings hosted by his parish. What a difference he made!
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass to be celebrated at St. John XXIII Parish, 35 Colby Drive, Cole Harbour on Saturday March 10th at 11am, Father Irek Bem presiding. Reception hosted by the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Women’s League to take place in the parish hall immediately following service. Interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
No flowers, by request. If so desired, donations made in Joe’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society would be welcomed and appreciated.
The family will forever be grateful to Dr. Harsh Mishra, who has provided outstanding care and compassion not only in the last few weeks but at any time Joe experienced poor health. Shirley is so grateful to Peggy Angus, a long-time family friend whose kindness and generosity has made this difficult journey more bearable.
