Jose Chaves
1922-2018
Chaves, Jose MONTEIRO, peacefully slipped away to join his wife Maria
Batista Chaves, he is only 16 years late and has a lot of explaining
to do––.Born on April 24th,1922, in Calheta, Santa Maria,
Azores, two days after his wife of 53 years, he was cradle robbed by
this bubbly Batista girl from the neighbouring village of Terras do
Raposo. Jose was the eldest of 9 children of Maria Monteiro and
Antonio Tavares Chaves. Times were tough and with so many mouths to
feed, at a very young age he was sent to live with his maternal
Grandmother, his Uncle Antonio (Argentino) and Aunt Maria. He would
be fortunate enough to have had the loving upbringing of not one, but
two families. He returned home to assist his Mother and Father with
providing for a large family. Following in his Father’s
footsteps, he became a skilled carpenter; a talent he honed until his
91st year. Jose Monteiro Chaves and Maria Batista Chaves would go on
to have 4 children; Francisco-Frank, (Fatima), Lucia-Lucy, (Joe)
Antonio Jose-Tony, (Sharon) Gualter-Walter, (Karen). Prosperity had
hit Santa Maria, Jose started his own business and provided an
excellent life for his family. The early 1960’s brought great
upheaval in Portugal’s overseas colonies; military conscription
was mandatory and with their eldest son approaching draft age, they
decided to go to Canada with their family of four. Canada provided
great opportunities for their family but also linguistic and cultural
challenges for Jose and Maria. These challenges were confronted
head-on and considered an investment for the betterment of their
family. Their 4 children would bless them with 11 grandchildren, Jeff
(Lisa), Taylor, Tonia (Terry), Nicole (Dario), Michael (Diane),
Katelynn, Zachary, Leah, Christian (Jenna), Corry, Haille , 6 great
grandchildren (Neveah, Leo, Keenan, Sydney, Sofia, Noah, and another
on the way). Jose was predeceased by his wife Maria, his siblings,
Maria, Maria Rosa, Saul, Celestina and Armindo. His inlaws, Jose
Pedro, Antonio Melo, Isidora, Jose Braga, Jose Batista, Antonio &
Angelina Batista, Manuel, Joao, Virginia & Antonio Andrade, Maria
do Carmo & Jose Tavares. He is survived by his brothers, Antonio,
David (Louisa) Urbino (Lina). Sisters in law, Esmeria, Coralia,
Laudalina and Natalia. The Monteiro-Chaves family would like to
extend a great sense of gratitude to our Father’s caregiver,
Maria do Carmo Ferreira. Her tireless dedication and commitment to
his well-being will be forever appreciated and never forgotten.
Special thanks also goes out to all of the CCAC staff, PSWs, nurses,
Dr. Tamara Holling, and Michelle. Our Father was fortunate to have
lived a long life with dignity and comfort in his own house until the
end; something for which we are extremely grateful! Well Dad, you
better start explaining, that bubbly Batista girl has a lot of
questions!! Good Luck! . Resting at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas
