Obituary of John Morgan
MORGAN, John Hanly – Of Peterborough, passed away on June 23, 2018 in his 100th year. John was born in New Albany, Indiana on November 28, 1918 to John Sidney and Vada Elizabeth (Dorn) Morgan. Predeceased by an older brother, Paul Hollis, and sister, Hazel. He attended public schools in Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Received B.A. in Education from Ball State Teachers College, 1943; B.D. from Harvard Divinity School, 1946; M.A. in Philosophy from University of Michigan, 1955; Ph.D. in English Literature from University of South Florida, 1979. Married Mary Jeannette Mutzfeld, daughter of Wayland and Mae (Bryant) Mutzfeld on September 6, 1942 in Butler, Indiana. They had four children: Lois Jean (Michael Hathaway); David Hollis (Kathryn); Lee Bryant (Beverley) deceased; and Ann Louise (John Friday) deceased; nine grandchildren: Blue, Vada, Danial, Sara and Paul Morgan; Morgan, Kathryn, and David Friday, and Grant Lauer; and six great grandchildren.
He served Unitarian churches in Waverly, Massachusetts; Charlotte, North Carolina; Indianapolis, Indiana; Flint, Michigan; South Bend, Indiana. Was Minister of First Unitarian Congregation, Toronto, Ontario from 1960 to 1973, where he was made Minister Emeritus on retirement.
After retiring from First Unitarian Congregation in Toronto, he was active as President of the Canadian Peace Congress and travelled across Canada several times and to international meetings with much emphasis at that time on the Nuclear Question. In 1983 he became a Vice-President of the World Peace Council (an NGO affiliated with the UN) and attended many international meetings and made presentations at the UN. He received the International Lenin Peace Prize in 1983 and in 1984, the Joliet-Curie Gold Medal of Peace from the World Peace Council.
He was the author of eight books, both poetry and prose. He wrote a history of his time at the Toronto church, Surfing the Tidal Wave (1994), and a memoir of his time in the peace movement, Pursuing the Dove: Reminiscences of the Peace Struggle (2001).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, June 29 at The Unitarian Fellowship of Peterborough, 775 Weller Street, Peterborough, ON. with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, John requested donations to the Jeannette and John Hanly Morgan Graduate Scholarship at Trent University, 1600 West Bank Drive, Peterborough, ON K9H 7B8 (Canada), The Unitarian Fellowship of Peterborough, or a charity of your choice.
