JOHN WILLIAM LIGHTFOOT
November 11, 1933 – March 25, 2018
It is with great sadness that we have to write a final farewell for John William Lightfoot. He was a generous, compassionate and caring man, who dedicated his entire life to his family! Commonly known as « Johnny » and/or « Goof » by his wife, in his last days, he was « grandpa » or « dad » as his family surrounded him with love and graciously found ways to thank him and reassure him that it was okay to let go. In the early morning hours on March 25, his granddaughter Michelle held his hand so tight, as he joined our mom/grandma… the love of his life.
Dad/Grandpa was predeceased by his parents Elsie Zirri and Wallace Lightfoot, his brothers George and Jim, his sister Lillian, his wife Virginia Lightfoot (Guest) and his grandson-in-law Dave.
Johnny and Virginia met in Winnipeg in the summer of 1952, fell in love and were married shortly thereafter on December 12. They were married for 61 great years, raised a family and put many miles on their vehicles sight seeing around the Kenora and Lac Du Bonnet areas. In the early years of marriage they resided in a home on Brazil St. in Winnipeg. Years later, they bought « The Land » and they worked hard to build their dream home out by Oak Hammock Marsh. He spent many hours puttering in the yard, and once he finally finished cutting the grass… it was time to start all over again! When not cutting grass, he worked 45 plus years for Burns Meats, retiring as a bookkeeper. He loved fishing and found tranquility in trolling the lakes whether he caught a fish or not.
The greatest joy in his life was his family. He was blessed with five children, 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren to date. He was the true epitome of a great dad/grandpa, always supportive, always caring, always giving, always so thankful.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his sister Sharon and his brothers Johnny and Joey; his eldest son John and his three children Kevin, Jason (Rena) and Jennifer; son David (Robbie) and his children Michelle, Lisa (Rob); son Jeffrey and his children Bruce, Christopher and Dale; his daughter Darlene; and his youngest son Wayne (Esther) and children Wayne Jr., Brent (Kaitlyn), and Tanya (Dustin). Grandpa adored his grandbabies and was so excited with each new addition to the family!
We would like to thank Susan for providing fabulous care over the last four years.
Our family will never be the same. He taught us a lot of things… but the one thing he could never teach us…. was how to live without him! Until we meet again, loving you, FOREVER and ALWAYS.
A celebration of life, featuring all of his favourite foods will be held at the Aviation Museum 958 Ferry Road on Thursday, April 5, at 6:00 p.m.
A private interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery at a later date.
