Obituary for John McIsaac
John McIsaac was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland on the 17th of March 1933. John and his sister Jane Rawlings and brother Jimmy McIsaac were raised by their parents James and Isabella McIsaac (McGuinness). John was Baptised at St. Anne’s Church in Hamilton, Scotland in April 1933. His sponsor was Mary McGuiness (his auntie Tookie). John received the Sacrament of Confirmation in June 1941 at the Cathedral Parish in Motherwell, Scotland. His sponsor was Edward Murphy.
John served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) from April 1953 to April 1955 as Senior Aircraftman.
John received National Certificate in Electrical Engineering from the Coatbridge Technical College on the in August 1957.
On the 19th of August 1959 John married Anne Doyle Smith at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Hamilton, Scotland, witnessed by his brother Jimmy McIsaac and Ann’s cousin Theresa Hughes. Their children Jacqueline, James and Stephen were born in Hamilton, Scotland.
The family immigrated to Canada in 1967. John arrived in the port of Quebec City aboard the Carinthia ocean liner on the 18th of April 1967 while Ann, Jacqueline, James and Stephen flew directly to Regina, Saskatchewan. They made a home in Regina from 1967 to 1974 and their son Michael was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. John completed his Professional Engineering Degree while in Regina working for Saskatchewan Power. The family became Canadian Citizens in 1974.
In September 1974, John moved the family to North Vancouver, British Columbia and he worked as a professional engineer for BC Hydro until his retirement in 1995.
Ann Doyle McIsaac passed away suddenly on the 10th of January 1994. This devastated John and he talked about her daily for the rest of his life.
In 1999, John moved to Sydney, BC to be closer to Jacqueline and James. He quickly became a regular at the Glen Meadows Golf Club, the Army & Navy, Sidney Lawn Bowling Club, the Boondocks Pub and part of the OBE (‘over bloody eighty’) morning coffee club.
In December 2017, a large cancer tumour was discovered in John’s lungs and it quickly moved to the rest of his body. He spend his last weeks in Palliative Care Unit of Saanich Peninsula Hospital.
John passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit of Saanich Peninsula Hospital on January 5, 2018 at the age of 84. John was predeceased by his wife Ann Doyle McIsaac who passed away suddenly on January 10, 1994 and his sister Jane Rawlings, and his brothers in law Archibald (‘Archie’) and Bernard Smith. He is survived by his daughter Jacqueline (Ian); his sons James (Monica), Stephen (Vickie), and Michael (Monika); his grandchildren Serina, Dylan, Shannon, Mateo, Anna, William, Alexandra, and Lukasz; his brother Jimmy McIsaac; sister in law Margaret Murphy, brothers in law (George Rawlings, Mike Murphy, George Smith, John Smith, Dennis Smith, Joe Smith, Patrick Smith), nephews, nieces, buddies and his special friend Ann Corrigan whom he lovingly called ‘Maggie’.
John will be remembered for his cheeky sense of humour (sometimes off-side), sensibility, thriftiness and love and devotion to his family and friends. He had a passion for golf and keep busy around his house in his garden (the rose bushes) and tinkering with mechanical/electrical projects.
Prayers will be held at 7pm on Thursday January 11 at St. Casmir’s Catholic Church (1187 East 27th Avenue, Vancouver) and a burial service will be held at Capilano Cemetery (1490 3rd Street, West Vancouver) at 11:00AM on Friday January12, 2018. The family will have a celebration of John’s life on March 17, 2018 in Sidney. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charitable organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer (BC Cancer Society).
