John Kunetsky passed away peacefully on May 25, 2018 in his 100th year. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Alyce, and leaves his 6 children, (Melodie/Rick Zarzeczny; Jean/Leo Broere; Brad/Christine; Alan/Michelle; Daphne/Rob Sharp; Diane/Ken Babcock), 13 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, all of whom mourn his loss but also remember him with warmth and love. Dad was a wonderful role model, and a man of principle with a deep commitment to his family and his community. He actively demonstrated his belief that one should give back to the community. Dad grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan in the 1920s and graduated teachers college. He taught Grades 1 – 8 for seven years in a one-room schoolhouse, before deciding that health care administration was a better fit for him. He spent his career in hospital administration in Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Belleville and Whitby. He coached the boys in hockey, sang in the local choir, joined Kiwanis, and was a hands-on dad to 6 kids under the age of 10. It was on his retirement that Dad got really busy. He was an active member and President of the Rotary Club of Whitby, and travelled internationally for Rotary International; he undertook trips to Africa, India and Thailand for Rotary and CESO (Canadian Executive Service Overseas). He curled at the Whitby Curling Club, loved to play bridge and golf, and entertained family and friends from across the country and around the world. In his final months he beat us all at Scrabble and Cribbage, and followed the lives of his grandchildren with great interest and pride. Our special thanks to his wonderful caregiver, Edith, who helped him to achieve his wish to live in his own home until the final few days of life. And many thanks also to the caring nurses on 4F at Lakeridge Health, who supported Dad’s final journey with respect and dignity. He lived a long and good life, and left us all with lessons in hard work, humility, and service. Bon voyage, Dad. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Wednesday, May 30th from 6 – 8 p.m. Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel on Thursday, May 31st at 3:00 p.m. At Dad’s request, memorial donations may be made to Durham Hospice or to a charity of your choice.
