Obituary Overview
John Joseph Madden
With gratitude for the gift of his life, the family of John Joseph Madden announce his death on Sunday, July 29 at De Salaberry Regional Health Centre in St-Pierre-Jolys, Manitoba, at the age of 91. He is predeceased by his parents Michael and Julia (née Kenneally), his sister Mary and brother David.
Beloved father to Genevieve, Patrick, Michael, and guardian to Patricia, Barbara, Linda, Frank, Bob, David and Susan; beloved brother of Bridget, Eileen and Sheila; lovingly remembered by his nephews David and Jean Pierre and their families.
John was born on September 2, 1926 in Ballyporeen, County Tipperary, Ireland. He followed the path of an itinerant ironworker, taking up residence in Sault Ste Marie, London and Goderich, Ontario with his growing family. A true Prairie farm boy, he returned to his beloved Manitoba upon retirement, taking up residence in Winnipeg and St. Malo.
A proud and respected member of Ironworkers Local 700 (Windsor), a lover of dogs and horses, of farms and fields, and of long drives in the country; he delighted in all things historical.
A fiercely independent Irishman and proud Canadian, a solitary man of simplicity and prodigal generosity, our “Wild Colonial Boy” was a character unto himself; he loved to sing and possessed a remarkable memory for details to the end.
A celebration of John’s life will take place at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, on August 9, 2018. Family and friends will be received at 10:30AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00AM.
Interment of ashes with immediate family will follow at Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to a charity of your choice.
