Obituary for John « Ivan » Halushenski
John “Ivan” Halushenski
John, a long time resident of Coniston, passed away peacefully at St. Gabriel’s Villa, Chelmsford on January 17, 2018.
Born on October 13, 1921 in Ricice, Western Ukraine. He was displaced by World War II and found his way to Germany in 1940 working in a variety of jobs. He married Martha who was from his hometown in the Ukraine in 1944. He remained in Germany until 1950 and immigrated to Canada in August 1950 settling in Coniston. He started working at the Coniston smelter in September 1950 and retired in 1984. John was a very industrious and resourceful person overcoming many obstacles in his life due to his persistence and strong work ethic. His heritage, faith and family were very important to him. He was an active member of his parish, St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Coniston. He was recognized by his parish in 2008 with a plaque for his work and devotion to his parish community. He cherished this token of appreciation and displayed it proudly. John was an exceptional gardener. He was fond of his vegetable garden and flowers, especially tulips and marigolds. His flower gardens, lawn and home were maintained in a meticulous manner.
Beloved husband of Martha, predeceased in 2005. Loving father of Paul (Louise), Boris (Margaret) and Steve (Jane). Cherished grandfather of Anne (Guy Roy), Mary (Shawn Berry), Mark (Carrie), Julie (Gary Wilson), Tami (Phillip Todd), Ryan (Katy), Natalie (Sean O’Brien), Angie (John Adavastro) and great grandchildren Julia, Ethan, Nicolas, Sheldon, Maxim, Yohanna, Rivers, Ainsley, Sam, Jake and Lyla. He is sadly missed as well by many relatives in the Ukraine. The family would like to thank the staff and residents of St. Gabriel’s Villa for their excellent care, support and friendship over the past 6 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Coniston would be appreciated.
