April 12, 1946 ~ September 4, 2018
Peacefully and surrounded by family, after a steadfast battle with cancer, John Edward Francis Hudek died the morning of September 4th, 2018.
He is survived by his loving soulmate, Irene and their children, Michael, Jeanne (Karsten), Katherine (Stephen), and Sara (Kurt) as well as grandchildren Tobias, Sophia, Carter, Michael, Emmett, Brielle and his siblings, Mary Forster (Ken), Joan Embleton (Dwight), Henry (Vivian Chabot), Gordon (Cleo Fletcher), Christine Vieweg, Philip (Kim, nee Chapman) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He is predeceased by his father Edward Hudek, mother Christine Hudek (nee Chamard), brother Bill Hudek, mother-in-law Marie Jeanne Smith (nee Grimard), father-in-law Edouard Smith, brother-in-law Sandi Mullick and daughter-in-law Carole Hudek (nee Yaskiw).
John was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farm in Hafford, Saskatchewan. As the big brother of 7 siblings, he quickly learned the lessons of responsibility and hard work. When his family moved to Winnipeg in 1956, John (then known as Eddie) began to attend Our Lady of Victory School, where he met Irene. His post-graduate studies earned him a Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan.
John applied his engineering knowledge to many pranks pulled with his Aggie friends in university. A man of many vocations and a creative innovator, John was an agricultural representative, farmer, beekeeper, engineer, product tester and designer. Agriculture was his passion. He later applied his knowledge and experience to nurture, fix and maintain everything around him, from plants to machines. Like a honeybee, John was constantly working on projects, usually to the benefit of others, like restoring a Model A car, and construction ventures with his family.
He was a giving person, who always had time to teach, listen and help. His actions and choices in life exemplified his values. He taught his children, of whom he is really proud, how to put family first and to work hard for the betterment of your family and community with a degree of humour.
Like Dad said “Life isn’t fair; when you get lemons, make lemonade.”
A memorial service will be held at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Ave, Beausejour, MB on Thursday, Sept 13th at 11:00am. A celebration of life will follow at Great Woods Park.
Thank you to the outstanding members of his medical care team and to family and friends who have supported us through this journey.
