John Edward Burton
July 1937 – February 2018
We the family of John Burton, with heavy hearts and great sadness announce the passing of our father John after a lengthy illness on Tuesday February 27th, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines in 1937, Dad was the son of the late Pte. John Thomas Burton and Mary Victoria MacKinnon. Dad was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle who loved and enjoyed spending time with his family as well as his hunting and prospecting buddies.
Dad attended St. Xavier Junior College in Sydney before completing his papers in pipe fitting. In his early years he worked in Ontario but for most of his life dad worked at Marine Atlantic in North Sydney, initially as a purser on the Ferries and later working onshore as a stevedore. Before retiring he also served for a number of years as the union president of the Stevedore’s Union working tirelessly to achieve the maximum benefits for his fellow workers.
Dad had many passions including hunting, fishing, prospecting, and hiking the trails of the highlands. He loved to retreat to his getaways either in Rear Baddeck or Whycocomagh, where he would pan for gold. In his latter days he enjoyed playing the stock market and panning for digital gold. Dad and Mom always enjoyed going out to local dances were they could be seen dancing majestically across the floor, enjoying each other’s company. Dad and Mom operated JB’s Dairy on Convent St. for many years and Dad was also a lifetime member of the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club and served on the board of the Princess Credit Union.
Dad is survived by his sons Derrick (Wendy), Vaughan, Sheldon (Betty), Blair (Georgina), Glenn (Edna), son-in-law Donald Hall, his 13 grandchildren, Melissa, Melanie – BC, Shaun, Brittany (Richard), Alicia (Curtis), Brian (Sarah) – NY, Adam (Katie) – AB, Mark – AB, Jillian, Johnathon (Elizabeth), Jason (Janelle), Jordon, Jarrod, great grandchildren Gracie Jayne, John Thomas, Quincy, Eliviah, and Lane as well as his brothers Daryl (Wallina) and Charlie aka Binnie, special sister-in-law Betty Stewart, his Aunt Juanita MacDonald, Uncle Leo MacKinnon and friend Eileen Dolomont.
