John D. MacDonald November 18, 1925 – February 18, 2018
The sudden and peaceful passing of John D. MacDonald, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend occurred on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at the age of 92. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his death.
John was born and raised with his brothers and sisters in Cape Breton and moved to Fredericton in 1947 where he met and married his sweetheart Doris and they raised their family on Union Street. He enjoyed his work with The Daily Gleaner and the Atlantic Advocate. He was a member of Gibson Memorial Church in Devon and sang in the choir.
He moved to Miramichi in 2002 and soon became a regular patron of Kingsway and the local Tim Horton’s coffee groups. He worked tirelessly with the Progressive Conservative Party. He was a respected member of St. Andrew’s United Church.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Doris MacDonald, his daughter Diane Arbeau (Leon), his son David (Elizabeth), his adored grandchildren: Darren Arbeau (Christine), Craig Arbeau (Jennifer), Jayme MacDonald (Lisa), Graham MacDonald (Alyssa), and his cherished great-grandchildren Ty, Ryan, Owen, Jake, Spencer, Skylar and baby Isla Grace. He leaves behind his brother Griff and his sister Edna and many special nieces and nephews across the country.
John was a man of many talents.As well as being a loving and devoted husband, he was affectionately known as Dad, Sir John A, John D, Iye Iye and Grampy.
The wonderful care John received from Dr. Slorach and his office staff, the doctors and nursing staff and volunteers at Miramichi Regional Hospital and the compassionate care from the nursing staff at Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home and dedicated home-care help was great comfort to John’s family.
Visitation and a celebration of John’s life will be held at Bell’s Funeral Home in Miramichi on Friday, February 23, 2018 beginning at 12:30 p.m. Celebration of John’s life will begin at 2:00 p.m. Address:Bell’s Funeral Home, 651 King George Hwy – Miramichi. In John’s memory, practice acts of kindness and if desired, donations can be made to Mount St. Joseph’s Nursing Home or Canadian Cancer Society.
The next generation of MacDonald’s has taken over, but John’s enthusiastic spirit continues.
