OBITUARY
John David Black
March 4, 1936 – August 2, 2018
BLACK – John David, passed away peacefully at home in Burnaby on August 2, 2018 at the age of 82
years. John is survived by daughters Jill and Jane, son-in-law Chris, sister Jean, and grandchildren Calvin
and Hannah. John is pre-deceased by his sister Barb.
John (or David, as he was known in England) was born in Hoylake, Great Britain. He attended Whitchurch Grammar School where he excelled at cricket and rugby. He then attended Liverpool University to study chemistry.
At the age of 21, John left England to study at UBC. It was there that he met Shirley McKelvey; they married in 1961. Together they raised two girls, Jill and Jane and lived the majority of their life in the Brentwood area of Burnaby.
John had a long career teaching high school sciences in Burnaby. He visited his family often, whether in
Ontario, Oregon, or England. He enjoyed sports, reading Shakespeare and historic fiction and nonfiction,
as well as completing the crossword from the daily newspaper.
His social time with friends was the cornerstone of his life. John will be dearly missed by his family and long-time friends. For those who wish, donations can be made to Burnaby Better At Home-Donations (Unity 111-4940 Canada Way, Burnaby, V5G 4K6).
