OBITUARY
Joe Hung Szeto
10 December , 1936 – 12 October , 2018
Mr. Joe Hung Szeto died peacefully in his room at Youville Residence on October 12th in Vancouver, BC at the age of 82.
Joe is survived by his wife, Sarah; children, Sylvia and Stanley; siblings, Kin Shek of Los Angeles, CA, Suet Mei of Phoenix, AZ, Kin Zhong and Kin Ping of Kaiping, Guangdong. He is preceded in death by older sister, Mei Zhen and younger brother, Kin Mo, of Kaiping, Guangdong.
Joe was born on December 10th, 1936 in Kaiping, Guangdong in China to Gong You Szeto (father) and Yu Zhu Wu (mother). He graduated from Chu Hai College, Hong Kong in 1968 with a degree in Economics. He married Sarah, a seamstress in 1971.
After moving to Vancouver, Joe began working for Crane Canada as a caster. Over 3 years, the couple welcomed two children into their home and Joe set about teaching them the value of education and the importance of following Jesus. His children remember him as a generous father who worked hard to provide for them.
Joe was accomplished at Taichi and often did his Taichi exercises up at Queen Elizabeth Park before he became physically unable to do so. He was a chatty individual who loved reading the Chinese newspaper, Ming Pao and the magazine, National Geographic and who was passionate about his hometown in China and sharing his life story with others. He was an active and dedicated member of the Vancouver Chinese Pentecostal Church for 40+ years.
A funeral is scheduled for 10:30 am, Wednesday, October 24th (with a viewing/visitation at 10 am) at the Ocean View Funeral Home, with a reception to follow (location to be announced at the funeral). Pastor Rex Ng and Pastor Sterling Lee will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joe’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Vancouver Chinese Pentecostal Church at 215 E 18th Ave, Vancouver, BC V5V 1E5.
