Obituary for
Joanne Elizabeth MacDonald (Rice)
Joanne Elizabeth Rice MacDonald mother of Christine Doherty MacDonald (the late Sean) and Grant Rice MacDonald (Kathryn), grandmother of Celeste Doherty, sister of Sharon Allison, wife of 57 years to George F. MacDonald, passed quietly at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa in her eightieth year on December 9, 2018. Joanne’s honour degree in Anthropology (U of T ’61) took her on expeditions to Tasmania, Madagascar and Borneo where she studied human evolution from lemurs to Indigenous Peoples of the World. She was a researcher on many First Nations land claims including the Nisgha claim in British Columbia, and the Inuvialuit claim in the Yukon which were the first successful negotiations in modern times. She was also on the staff of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Affairs which reported to government in 1996. Joanne lived on the family farm in Cantley, Quebec for fifty years, rejoiced in her cats, pigs, horses and a goat, and authored numerous articles for The Gatineau River Historical Society. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Friday, December 14 from 2 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 3 p.m., followed by a reception. Contributions welcomed to the Elizabeth Frye Society or the S.P.C.A. Quebec.
