OBITUARY
Jean McLellan
March 7, 1933 – July 12, 2018
McLELLAN, Jean Perley, 85.
It is with profound sadness the family announces the sudden passing of Jean McLellan of Halifax, on July 12th, 2018. Born in New Mills, New Brunswick on March 7th, 1933, she was the youngest of four daughters of Arthur and Edythe Gillis. Following graduation from high school in Newcastle, Jean worked for Trans Canada Air Lines in Moncton and later in Montreal, where she met the love of her life, a young navigator in the RCAF named Allan McLellan. They were married in Winnipeg in 1957, where Jean and Allan’s two sons were born.
Jean supported Allan’s career through its entirety, lovingly raised her two sons, and coordinated several moves after Winnipeg, to Moncton; Toronto; Ottawa; Greenwood; Lahr, West Germany; Toronto; Halifax; London, England; Greenwood; Halifax; Ottawa; then Halifax once more, where Jean ‘retired from service’.
Jean loved socializing with her family and her large circle of military and civilian friends. She was a hostess extraordinaire. More importantly, she was a faithful, devoted, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. To many, she was a dearly treasured friend.
Jean shared Allan’s passion for post-retirement travel, and they made the most of their time, taking many memorable trips with friends and family. Among their favourite were their legendary canal boat river adventures in France with some wonderful friends. They also enjoyed cruising on larger ships, and took a number of interesting voyages. For many years, they spent parts of their summers in Cavendish, PEI, and later took pleasure in taking day-trips throughout Nova Scotia.
Jean loved her home in Wedgewood Park, with its beautiful trees, back yard, garden, deck, and frequent visits from tame deer. There, Jean and Allan made numerous good friends. Jean truly valued her friends and family, and made a point of staying in touch with them by phone and by mail, right up until her last day.
Jean was predeceased by her parents; her sister Pauline Mutrie (Woodstock, N.B.); and grandson Tanner Smith – McLellan. One month ago she lost her greatest love of all, her husband, Brigadier – General (Retired) Allan McLellan. Having been together for over 61 years, in the end they were apart for only four weeks. They are now together again forever.
Jean is survived by her sisters Dorothy McCaughey (Moncton), Margaret Jardine (Halifax); sons Douglas (Dale), Halifax, and Peter (Julie Ricketts), Lower Sackville N.S.; cousin Ernie Gillis (Mass.), and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A gathering for family and friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. To view or place an online message of condolence, please visit: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
