Obituary for
Jean Chapman (McMillan)
Chapman, Jean
Peacefully in the early morning hours of June 17, 2018 at the Ottawa General Hospital, following a brief struggle with cancer at the age of 73. Jean was born in Toronto, Ontario, the daughter of Fred and Myrtle McMillan. Wife, mother, grandmother, music teacher, singer, traveller, gardener, bridge player, and volunteer, Jean was a loving and dear friend to all who knew her. Her formative years were spent in Toronto where she attended Humberside Collegiate, and excelled in school. This early success led to a degree from the University of Toronto, and from the Toronto Teachers College. She also completed a Masters in Education while she was raising a toddler at home. Her love of teaching children began while working as a Toronto playgrounds supervisor. It was there, in 1961, where she met the man who she would later elope
with in January, 1969. Jean and Vic have been hand in hand ever since. Jean had a career as a music educator, primarily as the local piano teacher. She inspired and guided hundreds of neighbourhood students throughout the years from her home on Hamilton Avenue. She also taught Music for Young Children with the Ottawa School Board, and was a kindergarten teacher before having children of her own. Later in life, she proudly served as a volunteer with the Canadian Federation of University Women. She is survived by her adoring children David (Kendra) and Anne Marie (Mai) and grandchildren; Lucy, Malee, Neil, and Tawan. She is also survived by her older sister Joan (Maurice), and their four children; Barb, Bill, Bob, and Bonnie, and many other relatives and very dear friends. Jean’s family would like to thank all of the medical and administrative staff at the Ottawa General Hospital for their kind and loving care during this difficult time. Special thanks to Dr. Clemons and Dr. Lupe who provided such professional and compassionate care for Jean. Family and friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) on Friday, June 22 from 6-8pm and on Saturday, June 23 from 2-3pm followed by a Celebration of Jean’s life in the Chapel at 3pm. Reception to follow. For those, wishing, donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the CFUW Ottawa Scholarship Trust Fund, PO Box 8392, Station T, Ottawa, ON, K1G 3G8.
