Jean Cecilia Getz
(nee Campbell)
Passed away on the 2nd of September 2018 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. Jean was born in High Barnet North London on May 23rd 1931 to Alex and Sarah (Kane) Campbell. A Scottish farmer and Irish mother Sarah. In her in infancy the family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland where she lived for 24 years. Her mother Sarah and Jean worked for a wee spell in New York City in the early 50’s. In 1956 she emigrated with her best friend Violet Sonnex (later Stevenson) to Canada. While working for Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario (as named at the time) met and married Alexander Daniel Getz of Killaloe Station in 1959. Their very happy union lasted 38 years. Alex worked for Hydro Construction for 33 ½ years and was a veteran of WWII serving in the Armoured Core F6H 66FG. They had two children Daniel born in 1960 and Janice in 1962. They made their homes in Blind River, Little Long Rapids, Calabogie, and Walkerton. After Alex passed away in 1998 Dan, Janice and Jean moved to the Ottawa Valley. They have a cottage on Round Lake and had many happy summers there. Janice and Jean moved to an apartment on Richmond Road and lived there for many years until Jean decided to move to City View Retirement Home on Meadowlands. In Jean’s younger days she was an avid cyclist and she and her friends travelled the roads of Scotland and stayed in the youth hostels. Her friend Violet and Jean also made a trip to Norway and Sweden travelling and staying the hostels and having a ball. In her final years in Ottawa she felt a need to renew her faith in the Catholic Church. She found great comfort in this and even went on a pilgrimage to France, Italy and Spain (against doctors’ orders). It was a life changing experience, for her and her health was vastly improved by it. She was faithful right to the end. Most heartfelt thanks to all the staff of the Ottawa Civic Hospital who over the finals two weeks of Jean’s life provided her with honour, respect and compassion and love until she passed. There are so many of you to mention by name whether a cleaner, porter, food worker, PCA, doctor and nurse. I will mention one, Katherine MacDonald who helped to get mom into a single, quiet room where we could stay with her until the end. Thank you for letting her pass on with dignity and love. Jean leaves behind many relatives in Scotland, Wales, England, USA and Canada. Also left behind are so many whose friendship meant the world to her. Funeral arrangements are pending.
