Jane McIntyre 2018

Jane McIntyre
Jane Lucille (Cook) McIntyre:
Jane was born in 1915 in North Dakota, a middle child in a family of six. She grew up in Success, Sask., where her parents were homesteaders: she was an excellent student and graduated from Success High School in 1932. She studied nursing in Medicine Hat, Alberta, but withdrew due to poor health. She met her future husband, Jim McIntyre, in Swift Current, Sask.
After marrying Jim McIntyre, they lived in Wisconsin. During WWII, she moved to California to be near the naval base where her husband served in the submarine corps of the US Navy. After WWII, they came back to Swift Current to work at McIntyre Manufacturing Company, her husband’s family’s business.
In Swift Current, Jane was very active in the community. She was a member of the Kinette Club, Beta Sigma Phi, and the St. George Society. She volunteered as a Cub Scout leader for 7 years and was a self-taught figure skating judge for 30 years. She was awarded an honorary Saskatchewan Lung Association Life Membership for her volunteer activities, and received a Provincial Volunteer Recognition Award from the Saskatchewan Arts Councils in 1996. Jane was inducted into the Margaret Woodward Theatre Hall of Fame in Regina in 2003, in recognition of 50 years of work in amateur theatre in Saskatchewan. She continued to donate the McIntyre trophy at the Saskatchewan Provincial Drama Festival. Jane’s working philosophy was, « When you can’t find anyone to do it, you do it yourself ».
Jane and Jim travelled extensively in Canada, the USA and internationally, until Jim died in a swimming accident in 1984. She ran the family business until she was 75. In 1998, at age 83, she moved to Edmonton to be near her daughter Grace and her family. In 2017, she was introduced to the Alberta Legislature by the House Speaker and her local MLA. Jane spent the last years of her life in St. Michael’s Extended Care Centre in Edmonton.
Jane was laid to rest at the Mount Pleasant Burial Park in Swift Current, with arrangements made by Warren’s Funeral Home, Swift Current, and the Southside Memorial Chapel, Edmonton. Rev. Annette Taylor, the First United Church Minister, officiated at the graveside memorial service on 24 August 2018. This was followed by a reception and short celebration of Jane’s life at the First United Church.
Jane was predeceased by her husband, Martin James (Jim) McIntyre in 1984. She is survived by her daughter Dr. Grace Wiebe and son-in-law, Dr. Leonard Wiebe, of Edmonton, and her son, William James (Jim) McIntyre of Whitehorse, Yukon, as well as by 8 grandchildren (Glenis, Kirsten, Megan, Michelle, Lisa, Jamie, Jason, Casey), 10 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild, many of whom live in Edmonton.
Donations in Jane’s memory may be sent to St. Michael’s Extended Care Centre Society. Donations may be made on-line at www.smhg.ca.
Warren’s Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements. For further information, call 306-773-8831 or visit our website at www.warrensfuneralhome.com and express your sympathy to family members in our book of condolences.
