Jake Martens was born in the RM of De Salaberry Manitoba on August 25, 1935 and passed away at Steinbach Bethesda Hospital on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 8:18 a.m. Jake reached the age of 82 years and 5 months.
Jake leaves behind his son Jack, daughter-in-law Karen, two granddaughters, Jody, Jen (Corey) Schroeder and two great-grandchildren, Macy and Levi, a very special friend Margaret Reimer and a special sister-in-law Tina Falk, two brothers Neil (Erna), Ernie (Margaret), two sisters Margaret Stefanyshyn, Helen (Larry) Schlamb, one sister-in-law Frieda Martens.
Jake was predeceased by his first wife Susie in 1966 and his second wife Sara in 2010, his parents George & Maria Martens, two brothers Peter and Elmer, four sisters Tina, Annie, Eva and Marie.
Jake was baptized upon his faith in 1956. Jake served in his church as Deacon, Usher and Sunday School Teacher.
Jake suffered from COPD, Emphysema, asthma and asbestos in his lungs. For the last six and a half years of his life he needed to use oxygen, various inhalers, medications which he took via his nebulizer to stabilize his breathing, which made his life difficult.
Jake was a very well-liked person. He made friends wherever he went. Jake had a great sense of humor. Jake will always be remembered for his smiles, laughter and jokes.
Jake spent the early years of his married life as a dairy farmer. After his son was born, his wife became ill. This was pre-medicare. So to sustain the costs of medical care for his wife Susie, he continued his dairy farming and to supplement the farming income he worked fulltime in construction. The construction jobs Jake worked on are numerous. To mention a few, Jake was involved in building the first McDonald’s Restaurant in Winnipeg, the Concert Hall, Health Sciences Centre, St Boniface Hospital and the Revolving Restaurant in Winnipeg. Jake liked to hire young men on the job, so he could teach them the trade. He was known by his crews as « Bubbles », which characterized Jake’s personality.
Jake spent his retirement years building things of a smaller nature such as; bird houses, miniature farm buildings, plant stands and shelving, and horse drawn vehicles.
The family would like to thank his Physician Doctor Roger Gingerich, Steinbach Bethesda Regional Health Centre Staff and the Homecare Staff for their excellent care.
Jake will be forever remembered and truly missed by many.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with a viewing prior to the service. The burial will follow at Bothwell Sommerfeld Church Cemetery, New Bothwell, MB.
