Obituary of J. Philip Hooper
J. PHILIP HOOPER
Philip passed peacefully on Monday, October 15, 2018 at the age of 83, at Kensington Hospice. Philip was the son of the late E. John Hooper and Muriel Walsh, beloved father of Sandra Heldman (Theo) and Ian (Cheryl) and devoted grandfather to Maddy, Ben, Josh and Matthew Heldman and Kenton, Maya and Callie Hooper. Philip also leaves behind his dear sister Pam Richardson (John).
Philip was educated at Upper Canada College and has always held a fond spot for his days at UCC where he met his dearest and oldest friends Allan MacLean Howard and Bob McMullen, despite geography separating them decades ago they remained fast friends all their life. Philip had a long and varied career first in the investment business, then years in the fine china business followed by a career as a fundraiser. He was well respected and an influential mentor to many. He was a true gentleman and always thought of others first. His varied career rewarded him with a large group of friends. Upon retirement Philip became a full-time grandfather, walking his grandkids to school, driving carpool and spending many hours at skating rinks and soccer fields. Of all his jobs this was certainly the one he loved the most.
Philip’s father’s military career in WWII had a strong influence on him as was evident by his attention to detail, and proper protocol. His formal and polished demeanour was offset by a warm heart that shone through it all. Philip had an amazing capacity to connect with people of all stripes. His kind and considerate approach to life brought him many strong and enduring friendships. These were also the attributes that made him such an exceptional father, grandfather, brother and uncle.
Philip also loved his time at Stoney Lake and in Florida where he was cherished “Uncle Philip” to David Richardson (Mary), Stuart, Leah and Caroline; Kathy Dingley (Paul), Jeffery and David; Elizabeth McCall (Andrew), Stephanie, Roslyn, David and Christopher; and Janet Boughner (Michael), Scott and Tiffany.
Philip will be greatly missed, and will always be remembered as a kind and loving man by all that knew him.
A special thank you to the staff and multitude of volunteers at Kensington Hospice. The care Philip and his family received reflects how all health care should operate. Thank you for making such a difficult period not so difficult.
Friends may call on Thursday, November 8, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville). A funeral will be held on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St. (north of St. Clair). Philip believed in giving back. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory to Kensington Hospice, Upper Canada College, Christ Church Deer Park or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
