Irwin Reimer
Irwin Reimer, age 85 years, of Swift Current, Saskatchewan and formerly of Simmie, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and the compassionate care of the Clover House at The Meadows in Swift Current on Thursday, January 4, 2018. Irwin was born on October 6, 1932 on 26-13-13 W3, three miles east of Wymark, Saskatchewan. He was the 12th of 14 children born to Abraham (Abram) and Margaretha Reimer. In 1946, his parents moved the family to a farm south of McMahon, Saskatchewan. He attended school in McMahon until he was needed to help out on the farm. Irwin worked at various occupations such as farm labourer, gas station attendant, mechanic and Cat operator digging basements. He took care of the ice in the Simmie Rink for one winter. Irwin married Alice Lehna on April 20, 1953. They lived in rental units initially until Irwin built their first home in Swift Current. They moved to Simmie shortly after to help Alice’s father, Eilt Lehna, on the family farm. In 1967, they moved their residence from Simmie to the farm and continued to farm until their retirement in 2012. They had three children, Dale, Terry and Pamela. Through their school years, he spent many hours travelling with his sons to hockey games and his daughter to figure skating lessons and competitions. Having a farrow to finish pig operation and growing crops under irrigation or « the irritation » as he called it, also kept Irwin busy year round. When he ceased raising pigs and had more time in the winter, he helped his daughter, Pam, for a few years, sell jewelry at various trade shows. Irwin enjoyed sports – playing and coaching softball, playing and refereeing hockey, and had a passion for curling, entering bonspiels around the southwest. In 1984, his curling team scored an eight ender at the Simmie Curling Club. Other interests were hunting and fishing, playing pool and shuffleboard. He loved playing rousing games of Kaiser with his grandchildren until the wee hours of the morning and cribbage with whomever was available. When Alice retired from work, they joined Square Dance and Round Dance Clubs and went dancing up to seven days a week. Their last dances were at their grandchildren’s weddings, where they received the honor of being the longest married couple, celebrating 64 glorious years together. In 1983, Irwin and Alice built a greenhouse attached to their home and through the years, grew cucumbers, tomatoes and thousands of flowers. A family gift of a computer became a source of entertainment and a way to keep in touch with his entire family, and son, Dale kept a steady stream of jokes coming his way through emails. In the last year, he learned how to use a cell phone and family members were able to stay in daily contact with him. Irwin is survived by his son, Terry (Sherry) Reimer and daughter, Pamela (Kim) Shaheen and Linda Hotchkiss (Dale’s Spouse); his grandchildren, Rebecca Reimer (Morehei Yophehki), Nicole (Mike) Sewlal, Amanda (Alberto) Orjuela, Sherisse (Mark) Treble, Nathan Reimer (Lynda Forsyth), Samantha (Ty) Ludwig, Michael (Candice) Shaheen, Luke (Jamie) Shaheen and Cole Shaheen; his great-grandchildren, Quinn Reimer, Isabellah Reimer, Sarah Sewlal, Samuel Sewlal, Micah Sewlal, Timothy Sewlal, Ezekiel Orjuela, Nathaniel Orjuela, Elizabeth Ludwig, Grainger Shaheen, Kent Shaheen, and Ava Treble; sisters, Irene (Glen) Curtis, Madeline Ozga, brother, Ernie Reimer, sister-in-law, Dot Reimer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
