Al made his last haul on January 22, 2018, with Kathleen (his wife of 61 years) and his family by his side. Al was born in Lumsden, Saskatchewan to the late Hugh and Mary Smaill. He grew up in Strathroy, Ontario where his older brother Gordon Smaill (Frances) continues to reside. The greatest love in Al’s life was his family. He was kind, caring, and generous, and enjoyed helping others. Many people have great stories about the way Al touched their lives. Al started out as a carpenter but over his long career he mastered many jobs including furniture refinishing, long haul trucking, and was the owner of roofing, construction, and equipment rental companies. Al was well known and respected for his integrity and the quality of his work. Al was most comfortable behind the wheel of some kind of vehicle or heavy machinery. He was in his ‘happy place’ whenever he was operating a backhoe, snow plow, dump truck, or grader. He also loved going out for coffee and breakfast at his favourite local restaurants. Al would inevitably bump into someone who knew him, and start a quick chat or a conversation with them. Al loved most kinds of animals, but had a special place in his heart for dogs and he carried dog biscuits with him wherever he went. Al loved all dogs and all dogs loved Al. Neighborhood dogs would stop by his house daily for their treat and a scratch behind their ears. Al will be greatly missed by his wife Kathleen (nee McDougall) and his children Nancy, Judy (Chris), Mike (Belle), Karen (Chris), and Barb (Dave). He was the proud grandfather of Dustin (Stephanie), Anthony, Cameron, Brian, Sara (Mitch), Robert (Tealia), David, Mark, Melissa, Jason, Michelle, and great grandfather to Riley and Peytton. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, family and friends. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the caring support workers at CCAC and the nurses who helped take care of Al in his final years. As per Al’s wishes cremation will be held and there will be no funeral. Family and friends are welcome to drop by for a visit.
