OBITUARY
Howard Chan
April 18, 1933 – September 3, 2018
Howard CHAN (April 18, 1933 – Sept 3, 2018) passed away peacefully in his eighty-sixth year. Beloved husband of 55 years to Stella (nee Toy), devoted father to Dean (James), Stephanie (Robert) and Liane (Rawle) and loving brother to Mary, Jessie (deceased) and Gladys, Howard was also a caring grandfather to Benjamin, Erica, Zachary, Thomas and Matthew.
He was born and raised in Montreal and graduated from Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University) with a Bachelors of Commerce degree. He then went on to certify as a Chartered Accountant, ultimately being awarded a Fellowship to the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec. Howard was a partner at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton. A professional pioneer, he took up the challenge of value-for-money auditing at the time of its infancy in the public sector. Through his committee memberships with the Canadian Comprehensive Auditing Foundation he championed research in this emerging field of professional practice as well as through the Quebec Order of Chartered Accountants where he also served on various committees.
Howard believed in strong community service, particularly to the Montreal Chinese community. This was marked by his long-term commitment and professional services support to the Montreal Chinese Hospital Foundation where he was a Board member. When Howard was not working or volunteering his time, he could be found at the golf club. Golf was a sport he loved and he committed his time to the leadership of the Summerlea Golf and Country Club, serving as its President in 1983.
His family wish to thank the teams at both the Intensive Care Unit and 4West Ward at the Lakeshore General Hospital for their care and support during his last months. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lakeshore General Hospital Foundation (fondationlakeshore.ca/donate/in-memory-of/) or the Montreal Chinese Hospital Foundation (mchfoundation.ca) will be greatly appreciated.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 14 from 2-5pm and 7-9pm at the Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home, 222 Autoroute 20, Pointe-Claire, Quebec H9S 3X6 (Cartier and Highway 20). A service to celebrate Howard’s life will be held on Saturday, September 15 at 11am at St Mary’s Anglican Church, 75 Boul. Kirkland, Kirkland, Quebec, H9J 1N6. Reception to follow.
