Herbert John ‘Bert’ Ryder
Bert Ryder, 89 yr-old patriarch, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2018 in Maple Ridge, BC. Bert is now reunited with Marie, his beloved wife of 65 years. Bert and Marie, known as the King and Queen of Hearts by their 6 children, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and expected 2 great-great grandchildren, are dearly missed. Bert was born in Penticton, BC, to Jack and Margaret Ryder. The eldest of 13 children, he was hailed a local hero as a teen for saving his siblings from a fire in Kelowna. Bert worked many jobs as a logger, firefighter, trucker in BC and Alberta oil fields, and from 1963-92 as head foreman of the Vancouver ILWU Locals 500 & 514. Bert is remembered by colleagues and family for being wise, hardworking, generous, and a mentor to many. Bert was a lifelong entertainer, who loved to dance, sing, whistle, and play his harmonica, often with his father Jack on mandolin and Marie as vocalist, & kids in the choir. He lived life to the fullest by the motto “work hard, play hard”. Bert was devoted to his wife & family, a loyal friend, leader, storyteller, and patriot. He cared for everyone and Bert was loved by all. Please join us in the Celebration of Bert at Glenhaven Memorial Chapel, 1835 East Hastings Street in Vancouver on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 1:30 pm.
