Hazel Olive Calder – October 24, 1928 – May 18, 2018

Hazel Olive Calder ~ age 89, of Berwick, passed away on May 18, 2018. Born in Springhill on October 24, 1928, the youngest daughter of Charles and Carrie (Corkum) Bigelow. She is survived by son Charles (Wanda), Port Williams, and daughter Cheryl (John) Ernst of Centreville; granddaughters Jennifer and Amanda Ernst; Sarah Calder and grandson Andrew Calder. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 65 years, Frank Calder; her parents; four brothers Kenneth (Clara)(Minnie); George (Grace); Gordon (Edith); Ralph (Mary) Bigelow and one sister Inez (Gerry) Smith. Hazel received her education at the Springhill schools, and Success Business College in Truro. She worked in Nova Scotia before moving to Toronto in 1951. Hazel and Frank were married on May 9, 1952 and began their life together in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. As an Air Force family, they moved often, including two, three year postings to Germany. Hazel and Frank travelled extensively during that time, seeing much of Western Europe. That love of travel continued through their lives. Although Hazel’s main job was maintaining a busy and active household, she did return to work during the 1970’s at such retail outlets as Marshalls Ladies Wear in Kingston and The Fundy Shoppe in Wolfville. They were busy years, with two active children in school and summers at the cottage at Trout Lake. Upon Frank’s retirement from Acadia University, they revived their travelling spirit. They spent more than 15 winters at their house in Florida and drove their motor home from coast to coast in Canada; visiting and re-kindling friendships with people they had met over the years.
Hazel was always active, both at home and in her community. She was a long time member of the Lionettes Club, TOPS and the Red Hat Society, as well as an avid contract bridge player. Cards were a constant in her life, and the friends she made lasted a lifetime. She was creative – painting and sewing, plus a constant stream of baked and canned goods coming from her kitchen. Her grandchildren were her greatest treasure. She enjoyed them more as each year passed, proud of each and every one of their accomplishments. Hazel and Frank moved from Kingston to Orchard View Apartments in Berwick, where she remained until her passing. The family wishes to thank Dana Bennett, and Eleanor McKeen, LPN’s at Orchard View for their endless caring and support. Funeral will be held at Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902-825-3448 at 2 PM on Friday, May 25, 2018, reception to follow. Donation in memory may be made to the
