Obituary Overview
Gordon Harold Manson
Manson, Gordon H. of Cole Harbour, passed into the presence of his Lord and Saviour in his 83rd year on August 31st at the Dartmouth General Hospital. He was born at Rice Point, PEI, to the late Harold and Margaret (MacEacheran) Manson.
Gordie joined the Black Watch and wore his Kilt proudly. After retiring from the Army he worked various jobs, bartending at the Army and Navy club for several years and as a taxi driver. His favorite job was as a parts driver for Parts for Trucks, where he worked until he became disabled from a car accident, he made lifelong friends there. He served his Lord and Saviour faithfully through the years. Even when he couldn’t walk he still insisted on being at church whenever something was happening and loved to pass out the flyers for special events. He always enjoyed the carnival and wanted to help in any way he could. He so enjoyed the bible studies in our home. He would give his favorite little girl a toonie every week and would be beside himself if he didn’t have one. He was Evangels Candy Man giving out Werther’s Originals every week at the Welcome Desk. He always had some of the soft center one’s set aside for special people. In the past few years he has been a participant at Northwood out and about adult daycare where he played cribbage with his buddies, and every m,w,f he had to have 12 Werther’s to take; Bribe candy he called it. His passion was always fishing, he and his friend Vernon never came home till way after dark squeezing that last glimmer of light in case they got a big one. His son Andrew shares that same passion. A funny story happened at the cottage when Andrew was about 8, he was told by his father, Do not wake me until the sun is up. The next morning we were awakened by a bright light at about 4 am with Andrew holding a flashlight in his face and whispering “Gordie the sun is up and the fish are calling.”
We built our home on poplar in 1975 literally cutting down the tress. Neither of us had ever built anything but with help from our brothers and friends we completed it and have spent 43 years in the greatest neighbourhood with mostly the same neighbours. Gordie loved to tinker with old cars and we have a shed full of junk to prove that. Gordie was the most caring, patient and giving person I have ever known. He would sit and wait for hours for me and drive the kids anywhere they wanted to go, usually complaining but in the end always gave in. The joy of his life was Jessica and he was an awesome Pappa teaching her to dig worms, how to wipe the dirt off a carrot to eat straight from the ground when she was little. He loved spending vacations in Florida with her. One of his favorite trips was to Viginia Beach to visit Andrew when he was there, he got to fish in Chesapeake Bay and talked about it for years. The last few years have been very difficult for him as his quality of life has nearly gone but he still never complained usually the most he ever said was “oh leave me alone”. Greg has been his constant companion playing crib with him and pretending not to notice when he made his own rules, and walking with him on the scooter. He never lost his sense of humor, at the hospital when the doctor asked when he started to feel bad he said well it was when she turned off the ball game. He loved his Kimmy and was so proud of her when she graduated High School. He bragged about her pottery skills and loved the two handled mugs she made for him.
Gordie is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ethel (nee: Leedham) sister; Barbara Guy of Calgary, daughter; Kim (Bart) Manson/Stockley, sons; Greg, and Andrew, granddaughter; Jessica Manson (Courtney). They were the love of his life. Loved by all He was known as Evangel Church Candy Man.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers; Blair and David, siter; Lorraine.
A visitation will be held at the Evangel Pentecostal Church, 1412 Cole Harbour Road, Wed evening, Sept 5, 2018 from 7 to 8:30 pm. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday Sept 06, 2018 at 11 am at the same location.
Donations in his memory may be made to his favorite charity Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, Halifax or a charity of your choice.
