Obituary for Gilbert B. Cheechoo Sr.
Gilbert Cheechoo Sr, of Moose Cree First Nation, made his journey to the Spirit World to join his Ancestors on Thursday, January 4th, 2018.
A passionate, principled, and dedicated defender of the Land, People, and Illillew language and ways, Gilbert always ensured that fires were lit and drums were beating in the hearts of all those he touched in his life. With clarity of vision, he returned the drum to the Omushkego, understanding its place and power. With the same unity of purpose, he worked tirelessly as a steward of Treaty 9 appreciating its profound importance as a source of meaning, identity, and strength.
Whether M.C.’ing and drumming at pow wows or crafting a strategy late into the night for someone needing measured guidance on a good path, Gilbert was always at home with his People. Of those, his sweetest moments were held for his family that he loved so deeply and of whom he was so proud.
Gilbert is survived by his loving partner Paula Naponse, adoring children Catherine (Eric), Gilbert Jr. (Dawn), Shaylan (Andrew), Kyla, Neepin (Jamie), Nathan (Martina), Jeffrey, Keewehtn, Jayde and Raine, parents James and Daisy, and siblings Elmer (Maureen), Lloyd (Annie), Rita, Clayton (Lynn), John (Nicole), Treena (Ron), William (Tina), Dale, Lorraine, and Lawrence. His impassioned spirit will live on in them all along with his grandchildren.
A wake service will be held at the EPR Centre in Moose Factory on Thursday, January 11th at 6:00 pm and continue throughout the night until the Celebration of Life which will be held in memory of Gilbert on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Moose Factory Community Hall with a burial service and a feast to follow.
