Obituary Overview
Gertrude Joubert
It is with profound sorrow that the family announces the peaceful passing of Gertrude Joubert (née Tétrault) on July 21, 2018 at the age of 93 years. She leaves to mourn with loving memories her children: Claudette, Marc, Guy (Denise) and Daniel; daughter-in-law Elaine; grandchildren: Steven (Duana), Andrew (Andi), Matthew (Marcella), Éric (Margery), Christine (Ray), Élyse (Ryan), Sébastien, Nicolas (Bianca), Richard (Alexis) and Réjeanne; great-grandchildren: Justin, Luke, Connor, Xavier, Beatrice, Theodore, Zephyrin, Gemma, August, Hazeleigh and Olivier, as well as many relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her cherished husband Léon, son Gilles and grandson Robert.
Mom was a calm, loving and nurturing woman of faith. She was the heartbeat of our little family who sustained us in every way. The home that she and Dad made for us was always warm and inviting, as were her frequent hugs and smiles. She was a caring and gentle person who had a special way of always letting us know that we were loved. Mom was also a wonderful cook who never had to rely upon a recipe book. Her Holiday feasts were legendary, as well as her midday or late night snacks when she would announce to the family “how about a little lunch?” While she was somewhat shy by nature, Mom had what can best be described as the cutest sense of humor. Her younger sister Huguette was sometimes the victim of her telephone prank calls and in particular during the 1960’s when teenagers had not yet caught on to that fad. Mom was a positive individual in every way and her children have fond memories of hearing her hum, whistle or sing as she went about her daily routines. In particular, mornings were unforgettable when she would hum or sing along with the theme song of Radio-Canada’s “Les Joyeux Troubadours” radio program. Over the years Mom became affectionately known as “Mémère Gertie” by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For the little ones she was a “Tea Party Hostess” par extraordinaire. Her grandchildren were frequent guests at these rambunctious events served in her miniature tea set … light on the tea but heavy on the milk and sugar. And no tea party was ever complete without an assortment of cookies and dainties. Mom was born and raised in St. Malo and she lost her mother when she was only eleven years old. Along with her father, brothers and sisters, she helped with keeping the young family together and subsequently, she left school in order to assist with running the household. This experience in her formative years was no doubt a precious influence on the development of her life-long and deep-rooted affection for family, and her strong sense of duty and responsibility. These were gifts that she generously shared with us and for which we will be forever grateful. Although we are heartbroken at losing this wonderful woman, each of us knows that deep inside, Mémère Gertie remains a part of our lives with the warmth that she left behind. Despite the sorrow that surrounds us, we nonetheless recognize that her passing is a beautiful opportunity for us all to celebrate and shed a bright light upon a life that was well-lived.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at the St. Boniface Cathedral, 190 avenue de la Cathédrale, Saint-Boniface, Manitoba on Friday, July 27th at 10:30 a.m. beginning with the eulogy at 10:15 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada at www.heartandstroke.ca.
