Gerard Patrick Aloysius Evans
August 20th, 1926 – December 30th, 2017
Peacefully in Guelph, Ontario in his 92nd year.
Gerard was the son of James, a school headmaster and Margaret (Campbell) of Lanarkshire, Scotland and was predeceased by his sister Marjory Stubbs. Loving husband and generous provider to Moyra Ann (Braid), he was father to Christopher (Diane Brannigan, Lancaster), Richard (Sharon), Maureen (Colleen) and Andrew (Karen) and grandfather to Gregory Michael, James, Alison, Cameron, Alanna, Stephen and Michael (Stephanie).
Classically trained at St Aloysius’ College he focused his late teen studies on the sciences, graduating from the University of Glasgow in medicine (MB ChB, Dip. Public Health). He lived on two other continents in his life including as a Captain with the Royal Army Medical Corps for two years in Lagos, Nigeria. There he met Lieutenant Moyra Braid of the Queen Alexandra Royal Army Nursing Corps. They were married in St. Andrews, Kingdom of Fife on August 12th, 1953. He practiced in general medicine in Lanarkshire and Ayrshire and in public health and epidemiology and later in general medicine in Staffordshire. In 1966 the family emigrated to Goderich, Ontario where he served as Medical Officer of Health in Huron Country and later in Waterloo Region, retiring in 1991.
His formative years were spent in Scotland with his family and Sandy, his loyal terrier with holidays at coastal Troon, Prestwick and Largs. He was an avid golfer and goalkeeper for his College team. Gerard had a passion for life and a love of travel and adventure that took Gerard and Moyra to Europe, Central America, Australia and New Zealand and to a wide variety of destinations in Ontario, Canada and in the USA.
Gerard’s family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018, 3:00pm – 5:00pm and from 7:00pm – 9:00pm (with prayers at 8:30) at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, (519)-749-8467. On Thursday January 4th, 10:00am, Mass will be held at St. Anthony Daniel Church, 29 Midland Dr., Kitchener. Reception on-site to be followed by burial at Williamsburg Cemetery, Kitchener.
