It is with a heavy heart the family of Gerald (Jerry) Walter Smith announce his passing at home on December 23rd at the age of 78. Born June 28, 1940 in Corner Brook, Jerry was the second child of Myrtle and Walter Smith. Jerry married June (Lidstone) in 1960, and together in 1965 they both left Corner Brook for Memorial University. Jerry later graduated from Nova Scotia Technical College with an Engineering Degree in 1970. He and his young family spent 10 years living in Nova Scotia before returning to his beloved Newfoundland for a job with Abitibi Price in Stephenville in 1982. An avid fisherman, Jerry was never as happy as when he was on the river looking for that ever larger salmon. Always willing to give his family a helping hand he was never one to shy away from a challenge and took great pleasure in figuring something out through researching, calculating, and drawing up a plan sometimes with a little help from the Captain. With Jerry no matter what, his family came first.
Jerry leaves behind his wife of 58 years June (Lidstone), daughter Darlene Spears (Bill), sons Jeremy (Danielle) and Danny (Rianne), grandchildren Meagan, Zachary, Tyler, Jacob, Madison, Daniel, Liam, and Connor, and great-grandchild Greyson, siblings Dave (Jean), Peggy (Bill), Bruce (Pam), and Ken (Glenna). He is predeceased by his parents Walter & Myrtle and siblings, Lou (Helen), Don (Bev), and Joan (Roy).
Funeral Services will take place on Friday December 28th, 2018 at 2 pm from Russell’s Funeral Home Chapel on Prince Rupert Drive in Stephenville.
“Fly fishing is like therapy for the spirit. The anticipation of stepping into the current, casting your fly and becoming one with the river. It is a time for reflection, excitement, solitude and being removed from our busy life and its worries. Thank you God for the River.”
